Today we’d like to introduce you to Travon Johnson
Travon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
“I started my business, Humble Beginnings, five years ago, inspired by a saying my grandmother, Mary Shine, often shared: ‘God will humble you but always gives you a new beginning.’ This powerful message became the foundation of my vision.
Humble Beginnings started as a clothing brand, but it quickly grew into something bigger—mentoring, entertainment, and photography. Each element reflects my passion for creativity, community, and helping others. My goal has always been to use my business as a platform to uplift and inspire youth, giving them the tools and encouragement to believe in themselves and their potential.
It hasn’t always been easy, but staying true to my purpose and remembering my grandmother’s words keeps me motivated. I’m proud of the journey so far and look forward to building something even greater for the future.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting Humble Beginnings was a journey full of lessons, challenges, and growth. If I could share any advice, it would be to stay committed to the process. Keep working hard and continuously researching—knowledge and preparation are powerful tools. Surround yourself with like-minded people, and don’t hesitate to collaborate with others. Collaboration opens doors to new ideas, opportunities, and connections that can help you grow in ways you didn’t expect.
Never be afraid to ask for help, whether it’s guidance, resources, or just words of encouragement. Nobody achieves success alone, and seeking advice or support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Most importantly, keep God at the center of everything you do. Faith and purpose will guide you through even the toughest days and help you stay grounded as you build something meaningful.
Remember, success doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient, stay humble, and trust the journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
“I’m a Community Specialist at South High School in Bakersfield, where I focus on creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for students. My work involves fostering positive relationships, mentoring students, and helping them overcome challenges in both their academic and personal lives. I specialize in conflict resolution, student engagement, and building connections that encourage students to thrive.
In addition to my role, I’m a leader in several programs aimed at student growth and development. I serve as an advisor for Project BEST and BSU, and I coordinate Boys Council, providing mentorship and empowerment for young men. I also play a key role on the Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams, where I handle truancy, check-ins, and re-entry conferences for students returning from suspension or expulsion.
As a varsity basketball coach, I use sports as a platform to teach teamwork, discipline, and resilience. I’ve also been instrumental in organizing workshops and events, such as youth and family programs, that strengthen community ties and promote personal growth.
What I’m most proud of is the impact I’ve had on students’ lives. Seeing them feel supported, valued, and motivated to achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is my ability to lead with empathy and build trust, not just with students, but with staff and families as well. My experience in youth mentorship, campus safety, and community outreach, paired with my passion for helping others, enables me to make a meaningful difference. I’m dedicated to empowering students and creating opportunities for them to succeed both in school and beyond.”
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The journey has definitely had its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Starting something from the ground up comes with challenges—whether it’s figuring out the right strategies, overcoming setbacks, or simply staying motivated when things get tough. But it’s those challenges that have made the journey so rewarding.
Each obstacle has been a lesson, and every win, no matter how small, has been a reminder of why I started Humble Beginnings in the first place. I’ve grown not just as a business owner but as a person, and that growth has been the most fulfilling part of this process. The journey may not have been smooth, but the love I have for what I do and the vision I’m building has made every step worth it. It’s a process, and I’m learning to embrace it all—the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
