Meet Cassandra Solis of Upland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Solis

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I attended a four-year university right out of high school as I knew that traditional college was not for me but as the first-born daughter in a Latino family the pressure to pursue education and achieve what my parents could not was there. After a year and half, I found myself on academic probation working two part time jobs to pay rent, I had to put myself first for a change, disappoint everyone and drop out. After years of odd jobs I had a coworker that was in an esthetics program, and she encouraged me to join a program as well. I’m so grateful to have gotten into an esthetics program through community college where I not only received my license, but I was also able to appease my family and complete an associate’s degree. As soon as I graduated, I knew waxing was my passion and I ran straight to a waxing chain where I knew my career could be fostered. I worked with hard wax first, then moved on to a soft waxing company to landing a position at a sugaring company where I found my true passion in hair removal. Eventually I was confident enough in my profession to go out on my own after years of experience and that is when I opened Soli Skinscape.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Thankfully I have the privilege of support from family and friends who help in times of self-doubt. Most independent artists face a multitude of struggles but the mental part of being a one women business is one you don’t know until you try it for yourself. Time management is an important development especially when you consider that you still have to balance a home life as well as the time you spend in the service room with clients. Self-doubt comes into play when handling the pressures of your own business, but the clients are the ones that give me the confidence to keep going. The relationship and bonds one builds during services is one of the reasons I got into this business of caring for others to begin with.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Soli Skinscape I wanted to focus on not only on body hair removal but the health of skin overall. Most promote skincare for the face but what about the rest of the skin? Skin is the largest organ with a story to tell. Sugar is a natural method of hair removal, and my favorite. Due to simple ingredients, hand molding which allows for following the true hair pattern and being less likely to stick to live skin cells. Sugar is protective and effective. While prioritizing hydrated skin, it then becomes about teaching clients a body care routine that not only fits their skin type but also their lifestyle. Within the last year I was able to expand into Brow artistry; from shaping to laminating and now tints/stains creating a brow balanced to one’s facial features is one of my favorite services. Seeing clients grow confident in their skin and excited to show their brows off is one of my biggest achievements.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
The city provides the landscape to grow. With a large population there is an opportunity for every personality and preferences. Due to the transient nature of the city coming across new faces and creating bonds with others that are not like myself is eye opening in the best ways.
