Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyra Thompson
Hi Tyra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started singing when I was six, just belting along to Disney Channel tunes in my living room. That love for music led me to voice lessons at seven, and I dove into choir in high school. By thirteen, I was gigging with various groups and exploring different genres. After high school, I attended Belmont University for a degree in Commercial Voice. Since then, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to sing for artists like Cage the Elephant, Josh Groban, Mickey Guyton, Dre Scot, and Kane Brown. Now, I’m in LA, continuing to chase my music dreams.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Juggling a music career with full-time jobs has definitely been a hustle. It’s not easy finding gigs and making ends meet, while also hearing MANY no’s. I’ve had to become a pro at time management and networking while keeping myself sane. It’s been tough at times, but it’s made me even more committed to my music
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love R&B, and am heavily inspired by 90s and 2000s R&B. I actually started arranging vocals before I got into songwriting, and that unique path has really shaped my approach to melodies and background vocals. I’m most proud of creating work that feels unique and fresh
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for networking is to genuinely support people you’re working with. I always follow up and keep in touch after auditions or gigs, and I make a point to show up at other people’s shows, even if I have to go alone. You never know how you can help each other down the line. And the biggest thing: keep showing up, because sometimes being at the top of someone’s mind is more valuable than being the best
