Exploring Life & Business with Ariel Barrionuevo of La Coralina Island House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel Barrionuevo

Hi Ariel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
This career I have? It was a path that found me. While studying Political Science, I took a job as a hotel telephone operator to cover my expenses. At the time, I saw it as just that—a job. But something about the industry drew me in. I realized how much I enjoyed creating meaningful experiences for guests, anticipating their needs, and making them feel at home. That initial spark grew into a lifelong passion, and I’ve now spent more than three decades in hospitality.

For over 20 years, I managed properties for Faena and Sofitel in Buenos Aires, shaping luxury experiences and leading teams. But I eventually felt the urge for something new—a different challenge beyond Argentina. But I was ready for something new—a challenge beyond Argentina. That’s when I discovered a hidden gem in the Caribbean: Bocas del Toro, Panama. The place had a unique magic, and I knew I wanted to be part of it. Moving to an island wasn’t something I feared—in fact, it felt like the right next step.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible people from all over the world, each bringing their own perspectives and cultures. One of the most memorable moments was hosting an African king—it was a fascinating experience that reinforced just how special the hospitality industry is. For me, this career has always been about more than just luxury—it’s about creating moments that leave a lasting impact.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been anything but smooth—more like a thrilling rollercoaster with unexpected drops, sharp turns, and the occasional loop-de-loop. When I first set foot in the hospitality industry, I had this blissfully naïve idea that my hotel school degree would be my golden key to success. Oh, how reality had other plans! One of my favorite (now hilarious) memories is walking into an interview with a prestigious luxury hotel chain, brimming with confidence, only to be offered a valet attendant position. And I didn’t even know how to drive! Talk about a humbling start. That moment taught me my first, and perhaps most valuable, lesson: in this industry, you never stop learning, and sometimes, the best education comes from the most unexpected places.

I’ve been incredibly lucky to have mentors who not only guided me but also challenged me to think differently. From handling crises with unshakable composure to refining the guest experience down to the tiniest, seemingly insignificant details, every lesson has shaped the way I approach hospitality. But one philosophy has stuck with me more than any other: at its core, hospitality is about people. One of my past bosses drilled this into me—not through corporate jargon or textbook strategies, but by showing me firsthand the power of listening, of being fully present, and of treating every interaction as an opportunity to create something meaningful. It turns out, the real secret to exceptional service isn’t just in the luxurious amenities—it’s in the way you make people feel.

One of the greatest challenges has been redefining what Bocas del Toro represents as a destination. For years, it was synonymous with backpackers, budget travelers, and carefree surfers chasing the next big wave. High-end tourism? That wasn’t even part of the conversation. Launching a luxury experience here meant more than just opening a hotel—it meant reshaping perceptions, proving that paradise and refined elegance can coexist. And let’s be honest, it hasn’t been a walk on the beach (well, technically it has, but you get the idea). There was no real infrastructure to support this kind of market, and even now, it’s an ongoing battle to bridge the gap between Bocas’ wild, untamed beauty and the kind of sophistication that high-end travelers expect. But that’s the thrill of it—carving out something new, rewriting the narrative, and watching people fall in love with this place in a way they never imagined.

As you know, we’re big fans of La Coralina Island House. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
La Coralina Island House is more than just a retreat—it’s a place where nature, luxury, and a deep sense of tranquility come together. When I set out to create this space, I wanted to build something that felt truly connected to its surroundings. Bocas del Toro is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places in the world, and La Coralina was designed to reflect that—natural wood, open spaces, and an atmosphere that allows you to slow down and reconnect.

What sets us apart isn’t just the setting, though that certainly plays a role. It’s the way every detail has been thoughtfully considered, from the way the villas are positioned to catch the ocean breeze to the experiences we offer that go beyond the typical luxury stay. Our wellness program isn’t just about a massage and a yoga class—it’s about real restoration, whether that’s through sound healing, breathwork, or simply having the space to disconnect.

Food is another important part of the experience. We take pride in sourcing locally, working with fresh ingredients that showcase the flavors of the region. It’s about simplicity and quality—meals that nourish, flavors that stay with you.

But beyond the guest experience, we’re committed to the environment that makes this place so special. That’s why we founded CORAL NATION, our initiative dedicated to marine conservation and coral restoration. It’s one thing to appreciate a beautiful destination, but we believe in actively protecting it for future generations.

At its heart, La Coralina is about balance. Between luxury and nature, between adventure and relaxation. It’s a place where you can unwind, explore, and reconnect—with yourself, with the people you’re traveling with, and with the natural world. That’s what makes this place special, and it’s something we’re incredibly proud to share.

What are your plans for the future?
At La Coralina Island House, we’re always looking ahead—not just at what’s next, but at how we can push boundaries while staying true to what makes this place special. Growth, for us, isn’t about expansion for the sake of it. It’s about deepening the experience, refining every detail, and continuing to build something that feels both intimate and extraordinary.

One of our biggest focuses is evolving our wellness programming. We’re bringing in world-class practitioners, exploring new modalities, and creating transformative retreats that go beyond traditional luxury. Wellness isn’t just an amenity here—it’s part of the soul of La Coralina, and we want to take it even further.

Sustainability is another priority. Protecting the environment isn’t optional—it’s our responsibility. Through CORAL NATION, we’re scaling up our marine conservation efforts, finding new ways to restore the reefs, and getting our guests more involved in hands-on preservation. We want people to leave here not just feeling renewed, but inspired to make a difference.

Beyond that, we’re always refining the guest experience. Whether it’s reimagining our culinary offerings, curating bespoke adventures, or elevating the details that make a stay unforgettable, we’re constantly pushing ourselves to create something that feels effortless yet deeply meaningful.
