Rising Stars: Meet Wayne Smith Jr (BigmanBeats) of Carson, California

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Smith Jr (BigmanBeats)

Hi Wayne, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been a hobbyist. First it was magic, then it was origami, then Rubik’s cubes… I’ve always loved being on the computer and learning stuff. At 12 years old I installed fl studio ( a cracked version) on my windows desktop and just, started making things. I was inspired by hearing metro boomin’s producer tag on a 21 Savage song (shoutout Jacob).

This became my life basically, lol. Making beats, songs, was in a real group called KBJ with my middle school friends and we were ahead of our time. lol.

The grind was make beats, make songs, send it to whoever I could find on genius, Wikipedia, instagram, twitter, whatever. Just make and send. My dad supported me heavily, being my first A&r essentially. Whole family did, but he was instrumental.

I eventually got cuts from this grind, Latto being the first one of note when I was 13 years old. Then it was Nia Kay, TheBoyBoywest coast, Lee Dann (an artist from Jamaica), Niecey Nash, Tom Peyton and a whole lot more in loads of other genres.

Eventually I was published with Ricky Reed at Nice Life in 2021 right out of high school and the grind has been more strenuous and learning intensive than ever.
It’s been a lot, but I love it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Lots of struggles. Not a week where I don’t say “dang, I could just sell all my stuff and go back to school.
My family doesn’t thing that’s a great idea at all, maybe my grandma tho. Haha.

It’s all very uncertain, making plans are hard. Plans fall apart like nothing in this industry, it’s just a constant hike and you never know where your destination is going to be at.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m know for my beats. (BigmanBeats) is my name.

I specialize in the beat making aspect and love creating.

I listen to all types of music. All of it. Movie scores, R&B, rap, folk, punk. I think knowing obscure music but also not knowing the very popular hits is what makes my music sounds so fresh.

I’m most proud of how I am able to express whatever I’m feeling through whatever I make. I can listen to anything I made and feel that exact feeling I felt when I made it.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I love life. A lot of the time I have no idea what’s going on, but I love it.
