Daily Inspiration: Meet Tamara Houghten

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Houghten

Hi Tamara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Shout and About opened its doors in 2015 after I found myself searching for a boutique with thoughtfully designed gifts that were suitable for a range a budgets. Focusing on goods that are lovingly made and designed by California-based artisans, as well as an assortment of finds from all over the world, the shop is ever-evolving. We do not shy away from fun, color, and are here to help you find the perfect gift for anyone on your list!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning a retail shop in Los Angeles for nearly 10 years now has been very full of ups and downs. We have seen our neighborhood transformed by construction and development in the area, which itself brings its own ups and downs. Many businesses surrounding us did not reopen their doors following the pandemic, but we are so grateful for the community who has embraced us so wholeheartedly and allowed us to continue to remain with our doors open.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am proud of being able to keep Shout and About open in Echo Park for 10 years this April, all while welcoming three babies into the world, and a second shop in San Diego in 2022. Shout and About is a family-run, labor of love. Everything on the shelves has been hand selected and chosen for our customers, while all shop fixtures, shelving, and tables have been handmade by my husband, Russell Houghten.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Supporting brick-and-mortar shops such as my own, Shout and About, does so much for the community. At any given time, we carry the work of hundreds of different artists and designers. When you spend money at a small, local shop, not only do you support the livelihoods of the hundreds whose work can be found here, but that money is subsequently largely kept within your community at the other local businesses found within it.
