Meet Kenny Gray of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Gray

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in New Hampshire doing musical theater and playing in rock bands. I went off to college in Boston where I got heavily involved in improv and sketch. For a while I ran my own small production company making zines, podcasts, and live shows. I worked as a copywriter during the day and performed improv at night until Covid hit. I made the choice to move to LA about 2.5 years ago and am now here doing comedy/music full time!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There were many times where I felt “lost” and unsure of where I was going. It’s interesting how, in retrospect, you can so clearly see the path and how all the failures lead you to where you are now. Getting sober was a huge moment for me. That shift led to many other changes that got me to where I am.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think what I am most known for is music and comedy fused together. I grew up surrounded by both music and comedy. I think what I’m most proud of is how the music I make both makes my toe tap and laugh. I like creating something that’s both good music and good comedy. I’ve been experimenting with it on social media a lot recently.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I find “networking” best when it’s genuine. I like people I can have a real laugh with and who also like to make things. Finding good creative partners is a fickle thing, especially since I’m a bit of a control freak and a tad shy. I have found classes and social media to be the best ways to connect with people. You meet people with similar ambitions/goals in classes, and on social media, people reach out to you, or you can reach out to them. It’s nice cause on socials, generally, you already know they’re making stuff. It’s all a crap shoot. Some things don’t work out. I try not to get too bummed and get excited for what’s next and carry on what I’ve learned.
