Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Barsegyan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started teaching at Modest Fly Art Studio Gallery about 2.5 years ago. At the time, I was an adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University, and looking for another part time position. Eerreen, the owner of the studio, was a friend of mine from high school who suggested that I teach for her on Saturdays while I look for another part time position. I was very hesitant to say yes because, I had only ever worked with adults, having to also teach children seemed like it would be more challenging than getting my MFA. I took on the role as “Miss Alisa” and started to learn how to speak art to all ages. (not without the occasional note from Eerren “Alisa stop using words like volume, render, aesthetics etc. with kids, the blank look on their faces means they don’t understand…simplify”) I took note, not without slipping up a time or two, and progressed to teaching at Modest Fly Art every day we are open, to managing the studio and helping with curricular development. I eventually took on an administrator position at APU, working with the college of Music and the Arts, Graduate studies. I currently work with the launch of new graduate art programs at APU alongside Managing and teaching at Modest Fly Art. I have enveloped myself in arts and education and am currently looking into getting a PhD in higher education with emphasis in arts administration. I believe my calling as an artist has lead me to a path where not only can I create my own work, but I get to help shape those that are as passionate about art as I have always been.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe that challenges are what help people grow and develop their character. You appreciate what you worked hard to accomplish. Smooth sailing, if there is such a thing, can devalue the result. There have been many obstacles artistically, financially and personally that I have experience, and every day brings on a challenge of sorts. I have learned, and am still learning, about my strengths and limitations. In part due to the obstacles I have overcome, and the support I have received along the way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Modest Fly Art Studio Gallery – what should we know?
Modest Fly Art Studio Gallery is first and foremost an art school. We teach fine arts; techniques, concepts, and creativity. We have developed curriculums for children, teens, and adults, rooted in traditional fundamentals and individuality. Our main goal as educators is to teach our students how to see correctly, there is a difference between what we see and what we think we see…Semiotics. We want our students to learn the rules so that when they break the rules, they do it intentionally. We create a warm environment for our students to enjoy learning and developing their artistic hand.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
In my own path, I have had many mentors and supporters advocating for me as an artist, a professor, a teacher, and a woman in a leadership role. The list includes family, friends, teachers, and fellow artists. At Modest Fly, Eerren has been my biggest cheerleader, giving me the chance to join her team and rooting for me to succeed.
