Today we’d like to introduce you to J Chris Newberg
Hi J Chris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Birmingham MI. I was a musician and a process server, private investigator. Moved to Los Angeles to pursue comedy and comedy writing in 2003.. Out here I have been working as a comedian, writer, and TV producer since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was far from smooth. I struggled mightily for the first 10 years not being able to find work and was homeless for about six months. Sleeping mostly in my car and on friend’s couches. A lot of lean years, but things kinda popped in 2014
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I tell jokes, write comedy, and occasionally make people uncomfortable—in the best way possible. I specialize in observational humor with a side of ‘Wait, did he really just say that?’ You might know me from my Instagram (@thechrisarmy), appearances on The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, or from writing for TV shows you’ve definitely seen. Mostly, I make fun of life in a way that helps people feel better about their own choices.
What am I most proud of? Probably that I’ve turned sarcasm into a career—and that it actually makes people happy, freeing them from worry, even if just for a bit.
What sets me apart? I genuinely love what I do, which is rare in comedy because most comics hate everything, including themselves.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a fantastic cook. I love it. I would rather look at pictures of food and recipes than anything. My grandmother taught me at a young age and the passion remains strong. My favorite things are spicy I make a pepper salad that makes your eyes and mouth water = one yellow, one red, one orange pepper, 8 habanero , 4 jalapeño, 3 yellow chili peppers, 4 Serrano peppers, one cucumber, one red onion, all chopped, one can of Ro tel tomatoes , Kamala olives, feta, one can garbanzo, and one can of kidney beans tossed in oil and vinegar with a sprinkle of walnuts. It’s our fave
