Exploring Life & Business with Shanon Rose Losser of Haven & Rose SALON

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanon Rose Losser

Hi Shanon Rose, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. I even wrote a paper saying I wanted to be a hairstylist in second grade. School was very challenging for me, and I even had some experiences that made me feel that I wasn’t very smart, and at one point I was worried about my future. My parents were super supportive of me following my dream to be a hairstylist, and with a huge push from my dad, I completed the cosmetology program in 2005. I absolutely excelled in cosmetology and proved to myself that I was extremely smart once I was in something that I was passionate about. Out of cosmetology I went on to assisting at a salon named Carlton, which had a great assisting program. It was a tough atmosphere, but I met amazing stylists, and I assisted some of the best, I still give thanks to this day to the stylists who taught me everything they knew and gave me the skills to be so strong behind the chair. Because of my obstacles through grade school, I learned that I would love to help other stylists learn as much as I could, and because I had amazing mentors myself, that became another passion of mine. I absolutely love sharing knowledge with other stylists, and at one point I had the opportunity to work as an educator for Schwarzkopf Professional. That experience was amazing and gave me even more tools to share with others. It was completely clear after that experience that I would love to be an owner of a salon one day. Throughout the years, I have built an amazing strong clientele behind the chair, and in 2022 my salon bestie , Karisa Bierman and I realized it was time for us to take a leap of faith to follow our dreams to open our own salon with the vision of creating a fun, airy, and safe space for stylists! In 2022 Haven & Rose Salon was born and we have absolutely hit the ground running! We have 12 stations that are all full with amazing stylist. We have created an atmosphere that is healthy, strong and supportive of one another! And that is our ultimate goal!!!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe Being a hairstylist is one of the most rewarding professions but it is not an easy one.
Building a clientele can be challenging and if you don’t have drive and work hard at it, it simply won’t happen. I will never forget the sweat and tears I put into building my clientele. at that time I would put in ads in local magazines, pass out my business cards on the streets and even put flyers on cars. I was absolutely determined!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to those who are starting out would be… Put in the work! Master your craft by practicing and learning from those around you. Take the advice givin to you and dive in! Don’t expect wealth over night and save your money!
I wish I knew to start investing in my future financially earlier because being self employed you have to plan on your retirement. Being your own boss takes a lot of discipline so do the work!
And please, stylists, learn how to blow dry! Blowouts are so important. It’s air forming , it the completion of all your hard work. Too many have skipped over a
technique behind the chair that is one of the most important tools in styling. Yes, soft waves are nice but a bomb blowout will set you apart from being an average stylist and keep your clients in your chair for years and years!
