Today we’d like to introduce you to Royal Carter
Hi Royal , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Royal Carter and I’m 26 years old from the Carolina’s. I claim both Carolina’s because I’ve lived all over them: born in Asheville, grew up in Charleston, spent highschool years in Greenville, college back in Charleston, and adult life in Charlotte- all until I moved to California. So when people ask me where I’m from, I just pick a Carolina and go from there. I’ve always loved the limelight. Maybe it came from being an only child for almost 10 years or my love for female stars and their tv shows like That’s So Raven and the Amanda show. But I always loved attention… until I didn’t. While a part of me always wanted to be on screen I always loved the mechanics of things too: the hustle and bustle backstage, how something was working etc. Jack of all trades, master of… whatever I could get my hands on. I participated in all the extracurriculars growing up, graduated with tassels for days. I had a choice to do a full ride for fashion design at a select college or start at my sophomore year with preforming arts at a select college – *I’ll take the full ride for 200 Alex* After my school shut down in my third year for fraud and embezzlement (dramatic gasp) I took a break and enjoyed life. Then I went back to school for studio art. But something was missing. I was older now (22) and noticed I cared more about how I look and the parties than drawing whatever bowl of fruit was due the next day. It wasn’t fair to those who were passionate around me so I dived head first into mine. I had always freelance modeled on the side and I decided I was gonna submit my work one more time and drop out and move to New York- until I got a call beginning of May 2022 stating that they loved my look and wanted to sign me in: California. I had completely forgot about California and without any hesitation I said yes and have been a resident ever since June 2022 (no time wasted). I love it here. National commercials, my face in store fronts, music video leads, short films, and self tape galore. It’s definitely been a journey and while I haven’t done nearly as much as I know I can; I’m so grateful for it all. Now signed with both modeling and acting agencies. It really does take a lot of work. You have to always invest in your craft and yourself. Find some supportive people and stay encouraged. It really is a jungle out here… even if there’s palm trees and a Hollywood sign. I love it all though, I’m a star.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No road is smooth. If it is, you’re either too comfortable or you’re about to crash. But that’s anything in life, it’s all about how you deal with it. Sometimes you feel just shy of being good enough, honestly. 1000s of people go for something- then you’re selected as a finalist to be placed on hold for a part: top 10 maybe 20. And you’ll either be #1 and get the job or not. So the jobs you do get it’s like: wow. I’m really “her” and the other time it’s like a purgatory of “please hold for these dates” followed by “we’re gonna release you” with no explanation as to a why. So the mind can wonder: “Why didn’t I get the job” “what made them say yes ,but their final response was a no” “why didn’t they choose me” and THAT could drive any person crazy. So you gotta know what’s for you is for you, and your worth isn’t placed in booking a job… well that and maybe a therapist. Idk, I’m still figuring it out but that’s what Sundays are for.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m probably mostly known for music videos… that and I’m easy on the eyes *toss toss*. Thriving towards a career in acting, my music videos are more “role” based instead of your typical vixen vibe but if 106 & park was around. I’d be the “latest thing”. I’ve had some social media videos go viral- as anyone does nowadays and I’ve done some national commercials with McDonald’s, Wendy’s, New balance, Dick’s Sporting Goods- or my favorite; my Super Bowl Poppi commercial. There’s my beauty campaigns or E-comm fashion modeling. I could go on and yet it doesn’t feel like enough, respectfully. It honestly feels like “nothing”- because it’s what I love to do and I’m nowhere near my end goal. I’m so hungry, I’m so passionate, I love what I do. When I post something and see the support it’s insane. It’s like guys “it’s literally just an ad” but I’m also like, “lemme not downplay myself”. My normal is another persons “wow” and I’m sure someone I look up to feels that same way. My never satisfied yet completely content humility is what sets me apart. That and God.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I often learn from other people. The thing is, in this field you gotta STUDY DOWN- like down. Never stop learning, and that’s with anything you do, no matter the field. That and also work on your soul. Exercising your faith, self help books, being open to criticism because sometimes it really is YOU.
