Meet Alea Gonzales of Covina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alea Gonzales

Hi Alea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have to give all the credit to my mom for inspiring me—she’s the one who sparked my love for this industry. As a hair and makeup artist herself, she showed me the creativity and fun that comes with it, and I was hooked. I loved watching her work with clients, and I’d jump at any chance to help, even if it mostly ended up with me playing with foils, color swatches, and—let’s be honest—hair on the floor (I know, gross). After high school, I was ready to dive in and started my education at the Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica. That’s where I truly fell in love with being behind the chair. The hands-on training they provided was incredible and really gave my career the boost it needed.

Now, here I am—licensed, working behind the chair with my own clients and assistant, constantly learning and growing. At just 24, I’ve loved every step of my journey, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey, like most careers, has definitely had its ups and downs. There have been a few bumps along the way, but none that were discouraging enough to make me want to give up. One of the most challenging moments came early in my career, right after I got licensed and was eager to build my skills behind the chair—only to have Covid hit and pause all that excitement. It was a tough time for me, like it was for so many others. Aside from that, things have been relatively smooth, with a few hiccups—mostly dealing with injuries or finding the right salon to call home. But honestly, those ups and downs have been part of the process, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in custom coloring, long haircuts, and extensions, with a strong focus on Blonding services. I’m known for my balayage techniques, including freehand painting, highlights, lowlights, teasy lights, and color melting, as well as K-tip extensions. What I’m most proud of is my versatility. While I might not focus on coppers, reds, or vivids, or precision cutting, that doesn’t mean I won’t take on those challenges—I love stepping outside my comfort zone and delivering amazing results no matter the project.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was all about fashion and beauty—always in my mom’s makeup, clothes, and shoes. I’d make my poor dogs try on dresses and jewelry, completely destroying my mom’s makeup while I tried to make myself look fabulous. I even painted the doghouses and the garage floor with what I thought was a beautiful abstract print. Safe to say, I was a very creative and expressive child, so it was no surprise that I ended up in a creative industry. The moment that really sealed the deal was when I was five at my soccer game. Instead of chasing the ball, my friend and I were playing with each other’s hair. At the time I thought I was pretending to be like my mom, little did I know that would turn into my career.
