Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Gómez
Hi Lucy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m from a town in northern Peru called “Reque”. If you look closely at the map, you will see it as a small dot, but it’s the place where I grew up all my life before I moved. My passion for the arts started when I was very young. Driven by my grandparents, (who have been my mentors and biggest inspiration) I started singing in the church of my town when I was only 3 years old. During elementary and high school I participated in every celebration and my teachers knew me as “the singer”. Despite this, my whole family thought I would follow the steps of my dad, who is a doctor. In fact, I started going into operating rooms with him when I was 8 years old, and it was expected that by 18 I would be doing surgeries with him, like a little Doogie Howser. However, life took a different turn. During the pandemic, it was my dad who bet on singing lessons for me. That decision changed everything for me, as it helped me rediscover my love for arts. At 15, I started going to the studio to record songs I loved. These experiences not only allowed me to grow as an artist, but taught me the power of music as a way to connect and heal. With support of my parents, at 17 I left home and moved to LA to study music, acting and dance. I learned that art has the power to heal and connect. I carry those values with me as I seek to become a well-rounded artist who can tell authentic stories and open artistic opportunities in my community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely been a journey of many lessons. Imagine moving to another country at 17, not knowing anyone and facing not only the language barrier, but also the constant feeling of being an outsider. There were times when I doubted myself and I felt that my effort wasn’t worth it because the opportunities didn’t come as I expected. I asked myself many times if I’d made the right decision, if maybe I was too hasty. Thousands of existential questions that cannot always be answered.
But I realized that if I hadn’t been prepared, the opportunity wouldn’t even have presented itself to me. It wouldn’t even have crossed my mind to risk everything for a “crazy” dream. And yet I’m still learning, still growing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work revolves around the performing arts and music. I study musical theater and commercial music, which has helped me rediscover my roots and develop my voice as an artist. I believe that combining technique and emotion, along with my determination to create positive change, is what makes me unique. I take pride in using every opportunity on stage as a bridge to connect with others and share a meaningful message. I am proud to have built a community away from home, with people of different nationalities, cultures and beliefs. What I think sets me apart is my story and my approach. Coming from a small town, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance. My career is not only driven by a love of art, but also by a purpose: to inspire others, especially young people in small communities, to pursue their dreams no matter the obstacles.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
This path can be challenging, but surrounding yourself with a good support network, practicing patience and maintaining your authenticity are key to enjoying and growing in what you do. Your path will not be the same as anyone else’s, and that’s okay. Invest time in getting to know yourself: what you are passionate about, what your strengths are, and what areas you want to grow in.
