Meet Justin Davis of Van Nuys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Davis

Hi Justin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
So I’m originally from Chicago. I moved to LA back in 2007. I discovered Future Funk, Vaporwave and City Pop in 2017, and have been a huge fan ever since. I didn’t have any ambitions to pursue music as a career, I later came up with the idea for Nite Patrol back in 2020 to cope with the stress of life brought upon the pandemic.

I began to DJ in 2021 and started performing live in 2023. I’m currently learning how to produce and make music this year. So far, I’ve performed in LA, San Francisco and Las Vegas, and I’m planning on some performances in Portland and Honolulu.

This journey with music has helped me gain an astonishing amount of support from those communities, and my goal is to help them by raising awareness of these genres for the artists, event organizers and grassroots independent music labels.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It most certainly hasn’t been a smooth road! Los Angeles is machine that demands it needs to be met before I can do anything for myself first. So naturally, money has always been the biggest ongoing obstacle for surviving the hurdles of living and generating opportunities and success. But faith, determination and a stable support group has lead to the opportunities that my colleagues and myself are beginning to experience.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m not really sure how to describe my work so far. From an artistic perspective, I feel like I’m an influencer with an active imagination. I see the different aesthetics for each genre and I want to take cues from them to create my own distinct lore.

As a DJ, I like to mix songs that flow well together by their key, bpm (beats per minute) and overall vibe. I want to strike a tone with people that come to watch me perform that is ambitious and that I’m not just mixing songs together but performing with the songs that I choose.

I respect that most DJ’s believe in “playing to the crowd”, but I think it sets a bad standard for people that aren’t afraid to stand out and express themselves openly and intentionally.

I love performing Future Funk because I feel like it gives me the freedom and flexibility to play different types of music and believe that I’m more than just a DJ or an artist. I feel like I can be and do whatever I want when I perform on a stage in front of hundreds of people.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I think that I learned a lot more about myself and who I really am when put to the test. Through music I learned that I’m capable of doing more with my wit than just with brawn. And lack of money doesn’t hinder my ability to be creative. I still have something to offer this place and it’s always been there.
