Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Fitzpatrick
Hi Brian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thank you for having me back.
I’m a screenwriter, an author, a speaker, and online educator. While nurturing my own writing career, I help other creatives who struggle with the business side of their art, taking them from zero to hero through my decade of experience in the marketing and branding trenches.
This really all began at age 7, after being traumatized by accidentally watching Night of the Living Dead. I was terrified and riveted. After a week of nightmare-fueled sleepless nights, I put pen to paper to try my hand at stories of my own. And I’ve been creating tales of wonder and terror ever since.
Fast forward to about 10 years ago, and I found myself getting serious about making writing my career. My screenplays were placing well in contests and getting me meetings. I had begun converting a massive science fiction script into a novel. And I was at the beginning stages of seeking representation and a publisher.
The entertainment industry is not for the faint-of-heart. My path was met with obstacles, closed doors, and a few wins. By sheer perseverance and strategy, I learned to promote and market my work, network with industry pros, and find ways into the business.
Now I have a bestselling sci-fi trilogy of novels, a film I co-wrote got made and is finishing in post-production, a fantasy novel for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign releasing in May 2025, consistent writing assignment work, and at long last I have a manager. I’m represented by One Moorer Media & Management.
None of this was achieved alone. Along the way, I had help and guidance from amazing mentors and friends, and I am forever grateful for their generosity of time and energy.
A friend once told me, to succeed in this industry takes 3 things: hard work, luck, and the actions of others.
This adage has proven true time and again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Trying to break into and maintain a career in the entertainment industry is fraught with close calls, deals that almost go through, and crushing disappointment.
Rejection is a common occurrence. It’s nothing personal; it’s just the nature of the business.
If an agent or producer says no to a pitch, the greatest words to hear after are “what else you got?” or “you’re welcome to send me new material anytime.” These statements are like gold.
Dealing with “almost” can take a toll on one’s psyche. Your book or script finds love and support among decision-makers. They push the work to the top of the heap. Their boss loves it and moves forward. More pitches and back and forth occurs until suddenly there’s a contract on the table. Your dreams are about to come true! Until they don’t. A million things can go wrong between a green light and actual filming, and often times deals fall through. All you can do is lick your wounds, wallow in misery for 48 hours, then dust yourself off and get back to work. A new opportunity always seems to come.
There are countless challenges, but each is worth the fight if you truly believe in yourself and your material.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I craft dark, gritty tales of creeping horror or wondrous worlds. My heroes crack one-liners through blood-soaked teeth and often have a certain moral flexibility. My characters are deliciously flawed and fucked up, and watching their journeys of redemption or retribution makes for a fun time.
I love to blend elements of science fiction and horror together, feeling the two genres are ripe with frightening potential. Even though all is bleak, I can be a sucker for a happy ending. You just don’t know- maybe the good guys can win.
I grew up with my teen years in the 80s under the guidance of Spielberg, Lucas, Cronenberg, Carpenter, HP Lovecraft, Anne Rice, and Clive Barker. These icons influenced my writing and sparked my imagination.
On the business side of this career, I have a decade in the trenches in the world of indie publishing, marketing, branding, and networking. I’ve taken this experience and harnessed it into a full-day masterclass and a self-paced online course. To bolster the education deliverables, I have also created mini courses that target specific problems creative entrepreneurs face, as well as some value-packed freebies to help.
My goal is to help people who seek to turn their passion into a business go from awkward to awesome.
How do you define success?
Success means freedom. The freedom to do what I want for my career. The freedom from stressing about bills and budgets. The freedom to use my time as I see fit. The freedom to help others in the best ways possible.
