Today we’d like to introduce you to Ziwei Song
Hi Ziwei, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story with Los Angeles starts in my age 19, when I started my 5-year architecture degree in University of Southern California. The passion of the city greatly shaped my vision with architecture, art and creative life. The various creative industry and their interlace inspired me. Afterwards I got my master degree in Harvard University Graduate School of Design. In 2020, I started to found naoonaoo studio, an architecture and art studio that focuses on interdisciplinary creations that celebrate the rich abundance within the ordinary.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my creative journey is finding a balance between creativity and client expectations, as well as market feedback. The aesthetic value I find in my work is not always the most celebrated or recognized by clients or the public. Another challenge is integrating the latest technological advancements—such as AI, AR, and VR—into my creative projects, while also reflecting on whether and how to incorporate them in a meaningful way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I run a creative studio, naoonaoo studio, that focuses on interdisciplinary work bridging architecture, art, and culture. The studio explores unique, poetic, and dreamlike expressions found in everyday life through the lens of architecture, installation, interior design, and digital art. Our designs seek to capture the delicate interplay between the natural and the artificial, while also celebrating the rich abundance within the ordinary life.
How do you think about happiness?
The creation and completion of each work give me great happiness and satisfaction. Works such as barbie mountain , the stone scope, phantom mountain that explores the relationship between installation art and public space empower me a unique lens to view everyday life through my work. Works such as the Climbing Parkside reimagines the state of everyday park and highline bridges. It opens new possibilities to view our mundane, repetitive every lives.
