Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Leslie Davis
Hi Dr. Leslie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am the product of two strong and intelligent individuals who decided to part ways when I was a little girl. Raised by a Black single mom in a small town, where I was the only Black girl in all my classes, I quickly learned that I was different and created for something special. Outside of my small town, I was surrounded by diversity with family friends who lived on the military base near my town, and I attended church in the inner city. Words of affirmation from my family, teachers, coaches, and peers have guided me along my educational career to become who I am today, Dr. Leslie Davis.
As I reflect on my teen years, it wasn’t uncommon for me to be asked by my peers and adults for advice regarding relationships conflicts of all kinds. I knew at the age of 13 that I wanted to be a therapist because I enjoyed helping others navigate their relationship conflicts. These experiences motivated me to become an expert in relationships with a passion to cultivate experiences of healing in their hearts of many, so they can experience what everyone desires…true love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the most challenging parts of my journey has been the limitations others set on me for being a single mom. Most of society might say that single moms are struggling in various ways, which can make goal achievement either impossible or more time-consuming. My life has been the example that when you live by purpose instead of chasing a dollar, you can achieve all that God desires for you. Being a single mom has never stopped me from accomplishing my goals or living my dreams.
Everyone I know always asks me how I do all the things I do. All I can say is it is only by the grace of God. By chasing purpose and destiny I have been able to become Dr. D, own multiple businesses including a nonprofit established to empower single moms, and raise a heart warrior son into adulthood, all by living the single mom life. To be honest, I don’t feel that any part of my life has been a struggle. Instead I choose to see the challenges as motivation to crush my goals.
As you know, we’re big fans of SHE Matters™. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
SHE Matters™ began as a psycho-educational podcast, available on Apple and Spotify, that I created as part of my PhD dissertation. The intention is to empower Black single moms in America to break free from toxic relationships and to develop healthy relationships. By doing so, the hope is for single moms to experience less anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. In 2023 I decided to launch SHE Matters™ as a movement to empower single moms around the world. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2023, I posted a photo of myself wearing a hoodie with the SHE Matters™ logo. The response was confirmation that I needed to share this mission with the world. Through my brand I aim to bring awareness to the mental health struggles of all single moms so others will also know how to best support them.
Aside from the podcast, current products that are available for purchase include: t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, coffee mugs, water bottles, and journals. My newest product release is The First Year Relationship Conversation Cards, created to help couples ask the tough questions that might be uncomfortable to ask in the beginning of the relationship.
It is always a proud moment when I am able to connect with single moms in the community who feel bold enough to share their struggles of living the single mom life with me. As the brand becomes more visible, I would love to incorporate my love for coffee by hosting local Coffee Chats and summits around the world to bring single moms together to empower each other.
Any big plans?
I won’t be shy or secretive about my plans because I am firm believer that you have not because you ask not. For the past year, I have been working on a special book to address the toxicity we experience in relationships as single moms. I would love to see this book made available in coffee shops, airports, and domestic violence shelters.
Another goal I have is to connect with a coffee brand or coffee shop to spread awareness of the mental health needs of single moms. Everyone who knows me know that Dr. D loves her coffee. I am perfectly fine meeting with clients individually, but I feel that it’s time to expand my territory and facilitate the healing of broken hearts in a new way. With that said, I am looking forward to hosting small and intimate group conversations for single moms across the country and eventually the world. I’ll be bold in saying that I envision myself meeting with single moms in Paris, Italy, Japan, London, and all over the U.S.
