Meet Vanessa Amaton of Gypsy Glow Studio in Redondo Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Amaton.

Vanessa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I enrolled in a R.O.P Cosmetology program in high school and didn’t take it very seriously. I was living in and out of a friends house and was just trying to finish high school. I graduated and then I attended Pasadena City College for their Cosmetology program. A year later, I had my license and was hired on as an assistant at a salon. I was 19 living by myself, not completely focused on life and struggling to pay my bills.

Then an opportunity came up to move to South Bay and I was ready for a change ! I fell in Love! I worked at a small salon and local restaurant to make ends meet. I then got hired on at a Rockabilly inspired salon. I learned so much and built a full-time clientele! A few years later, I ended up leaving for another adventure. I left the area and in 2008 at 24 years old, I had my beautiful daughter Kiera Marlee!

A year later, as a single mom, I knew South Bay was going to be our home together. I moved back, worked at a hair cutting shop, few salons and built my clientele up again. I was so focused on building my clientele and taking care of my daughter. I never thought of venturing out on my own. I was happy at the places for the time being, but always knew I needed to be able to create a space of my own. That is when Gypsy Glow Studio was created in 2018! I wanted to create a welcoming, creative, spiritual vibe for myself and for my amazing clients!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
After I had my daughter, I became extremely allergic to hair color. I saw so many dermatologists and they told me to leave the hair business. There was no way! This is what I loved and all I knew, but I had to figure something out. So I decided to leave more of a salon atmosphere and just cut hair! I was referred to a Herbalist and she was able to help me with my skin allergies. I was healed with herbs and was told what food and products to stay away from. While I was working at more of a hair cutting shop, I learned how to cut and fade on my male clients. This opened so many doors for me. I ended up leaving the shop for a salon, played around with hair color and once again built up an even larger clientele!

In February 2016, I ended up losing my mother Beverly in a car accident. I just fell apart. She was the most Amazing, Hippie, free Spirited Woman, I knew! She was all about taking care of yourself, essential oils and cannabis healing. I was deeply searching to heal from this so I started to read more on mediation, self-love, crystals and spiritual healing. I felt myself shedding those dead leaves off my branches and knew there was light leading me to change my path.

One day I was at home and I was clearing out all my old energy and I had this Spiritual Awakening! I knew I needed to be free on my own, and on my own path. A few days later, my cousin invited me to an Intention & Manifesting Circle she organized. I picked two Angel Cards that read ” Use your Imagination and you’ll see the Answer ” and ” Go for it !” They were spot on and it was definitely conformation for me to move forward. I felt the shift happening! I had my mom in the back of my head like “Nessa just go for it !” and I did. I took up the opportunity to build out my very own hair studio at Phenix Salon Suites. It was the BEST thing I have ever did!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Gypsy Glow Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
When you walk into Gypsy Glow, you’ll feel a Fresh, Comfortable, Creative vibe. Colorful lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Beautiful indoor plants, a wood wall with vintage mirrors, and gold velvet curtains. Art pieces, crystals, angels cards for a read and the smell of palo santo.

I’m so proud of this space, she is definitely dedicated to my mother. She just moved to her own drumbeat and taught me to do the same. My father would always call her a Gypsy and that just stuck with me. We were always moving around, onto new adventures and she always taught me to blossom everywhere we went. I wanted to create a space with a special vibe!

I specialize in edgy, short haircuts and color. I love natural highlights, vibrant colors, balayage, long layers, and healthy hair. I also enjoy clipper cuts and creative styling for my male clients as well. I absolutely adore my clients and they have definitely become family to me. Most of them have seen my daughter grow up. I have worked their weddings and traveled for special events. I am so blessed to be where I am today. When I invite my clients to come into my studio, I’m all about giving them an Amazing experience. To show them an extension of myself, some good energy and to always walk out Glowing!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would Love to eventually grow Gypsy Glow and become a larger salon! To have a group of spiritual and creative stylist by my side! To bring in artists for the available services, dreadlock making, henna tattooing, jewelry designing, and spiritual healing. Definitely, want to host manifesting circles. Macrame making and chakra healing. To also have local hand-poured candles, incense, and crystals to purchase. The list really goes on and on!

Gypsy Glow has been a little over a year old and I am still adding to my studio. I definitely have a lot of ideas for my second home. So in the near future, I plan to rent out my studio and possibly work less days. To spend more traveling time with my daughter. In the meantime, I have been enjoying every minute of it and can’t wait for what the future holds Namaste!
