Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Brill.
Katie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been intrigued by photographs. Always taking pictures, with any camera in my hands. It wasn’t until my senior year in high school that I really considered photography as a career. I went to Hallmark Institute of Photography, in Turners Falls, MA and graduated in June 2013.
From Hallmark, I went to work at a portrait studio in NYC. It was a great experience, I had to work quickly, and think on my feet. However, I had to work within the companies style, and after a year I was ready to move on.
I moved to LA in 2014, I started to assist photographer’s, and do personal work.
Currently, I work at a promotional product studio, Bovary & Butterfly, photographing our products, designing and coordinating with clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
My struggle is finding clients that respect and value my work. There are so many people out there that will do photography just to make some extra cash at the end of the month. To me, that is not respecting photography as a career path.
It’s so easy to want to give up, to switch focus on a new career. At the end of the day, this is what I want to do with my life. I want to wake up everyday, in love with what I do, and photography will always be the answer.
What’s the hardest part of your job?
Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. I don’t do it enough. Honestly, it is not my strongest suit.
How do you define success?
Success is when a client is in love with their photos, and can’t wait to share them with their family and friends. Another part of success, for me, is to be busy enough, that photography is my main source of income. When I become my own boss, and determine when and how I work.
What are your plans for the future?
Ultimately, I want to own a studio/fine art gallery. Not just to hang my art, but along with other artists, of all mediums.
