Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Walters.
Sandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Divine XLII was dreamed up while I had a few moments alone away from my kids, the shower, ha ha! I heard what I can only describe as a whisper from God, to create jewelry for women that express stories of empowerment from the trials we as women go through. I draw inspiration from my life, the struggles I have encountered and how those circumstances have made me stronger as not only a mother but as a woman.
I actually started my first business ever in 2016 with my husband. It was an online baby boutique for all things Hip Hop. It was inspired by our love for Hip Hop and sharing that with our first child, our daughter. Our first design ever was a Tupac tee that said “I Get Around,” with a stroller on it. We had about 15 unique designs, but as we started to have more kids and my husband focusing on growing his business, I couldn’t keep up with the demand that a small business needs, so I had to shut it down. I don’t think it will be forever though.
Through that experience, I learned a lot about building websites, marketing online, Instagram, Facebook, graphic design. I couldn’t believe as a young mother how much knowledge I had acquired. So as I transition into this next phase of my life, three kids later, I am excited to grow again and share a piece of me with this world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! I struggled with consistency. And when things weren’t happening right away with our first store, I got discouraged and just wanted to give up. I was always so nervous about our designs. If people love them or think it’s cheesy. I believe that is what held me back, not being confident in what I was putting out into the world. Letting other’s opinions cripple me.
I truly believe that everything we go through has a purpose. We have a choice to either learn from it and grow or stay the victim to our circumstances. In the time of starting my first business to now, I have gone through some tough times, but each of those times were challenging me to grow, learn, and choose what is right for ME. I am thankful for those experiences because here I am starting this journey again and I’m not the same fearful woman I was four years before.
Please tell us about Divine XLII.
Divine XLII is a luxury jewelry boutique, currently only debuting necklaces. My business officially opens on October 2nd of this year. Each design is hand stamped on Gold Filled discs and all the pieces of the jewelry is Gold Filled.
What I am most proud of is how quickly I moved when I first had this thought. Divine XLII was born from a dark time in my life, and I chose to create something beautiful from my hurting. I wanted to inspire and encourage women to keep moving forward, to not let what you are going through to stop you, and that you will find healing. There will be a time where you can finally breathe, and that beautiful things are born from hurt and pain. I actually knew nothing about jewelry, how to find wholesalers, and how to even hand stamp impressions/designs on a metal disc. I went to YouTube, started doing research, and within a few short months, here I am. Plus, it helps to have a husband who knows a thing or two about starting a business lol.
I believe what sets me apart is that each design is unique and has a story behind the piece that speaks to a journey. My pieces are made to embrace those stories, find power and healing, and by choosing to wear their story a woman is empowered.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as a child has to be watching Disneyland’s fireworks at night with my siblings. I grew up in the OC, Disneyland was literally in our backyard, and looking out the window in my brother’s room with my brother, sister, and our parents was probably the best times we shared. So much magic and mystery, but the fun and laughter stand out more.
