Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Vu.
Paul, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was raised in Anchorage, Alaska and moved down to LA for college. While studying architecture in grad school, I won a design competition hosted by LG, which sent me to Milan, Italy to showcase my work. During that time, they invited me to do event and product photography for them, and so began my photography career. Being raised in Alaska really fostered my sense of exploration, so I am really lucky to call Los Angeles my playground and studio.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have definitely been a couple rough patches! I joined the workforce during the last economic downturn. My girlfriend at the time was also an architecture graduate, so we wound up interviewing for the same position on more than one occasion. That was fun. Not long after, my entire photo kit was stolen. So, I learned how to shoot film. I knew, even then, that this was turning me into a better photographer. Smooth seas don’t make good sailors!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Paul Vu Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I primarily photograph buildings for architects and designers. I am most proud of the value that I bring to my clients; many of my photos have helped them win awards and get published. I also have a very competitive fee schedule, made possible by running a lean practice with low overhead. All of this translates to a growing list of long-term relationships where everyone benefits.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
More airtime! Either in helicopters with the doors off, or by flying my drone.
