Meet Orange Hairstylist: Shaina Hook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaina Hook.

Shaina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve had a passion for hair all of my life. One of my earliest memories is giving myself bangs at age 5. I’m the oldest of 3, so I was always orchestrating “make overs” on my siblings. I started cutting and coloring hair for friends and family in high school. After a few year of trying to fit into the college scene, I decided to peruse my love for hair. I enrolled in a local community college and things started to click. I couldn’t get enough, I became president of my class and one of the top students. While I was still in school, I began working with a team of makeup artists and photographers in LA. My work has been published in Lucire Magazine, Sports Illustrated Magazine, and Designer Original Magazine. I started my career behind the chair at Sport Clips and learned the art of men’s grooming. I also assisted the owner of M the Salon in Newport Beach. There I began to branch out with cutting, coloring, extensions, and styling. I have since moved on to having my own chair at the Plaza Salon in Orange working with Aveda.

Has it been a smooth road?
My mantra has been hustle and stay humble. The journey has not been easy. While learning my craft I would sometimes be working 3 jobs at once. I had to sacrifice time with family, money, and even put myself into pre-term labor trying to reach my goal of being an independent stylist. But as the Japanese proverb says “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.”

Is there some part of you work that is particularly difficult?
The most challenging aspect of my job is color formulation. Aveda color is not your typical measure and mix color. I get to add the tones into the formula to create custom flavors. Fine tuning a client’s color is both challenging and fascinating.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is a fluid idea. Right now it is a full clientele and renting a chair. However, I like looking at the bigger picture. Success is providing for my loved ones as well as the community. It’s achieving my goals and paying it forward.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would love to be in education somewhere along the line. I love nerding out on anything hair & sharing it with whoever will listen. I would also love to get back into doing hair on set.
