Meet Maria Leguizamon of Colombian Mafia Fit in Studio City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Leguizamon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first got into fitness through my passion for yoga. I fell in love with yoga and decided to learn more about it and became an instructor and began teaching students the process of proper breathing, which is an integral part of yoga. I soon realized that by combining key elements of the breathing process and movement, I could help students achieve goals beyond their reach. Many try to jump straight into excessive whilst forgetting the importance of proper breathing.

I started extending my yoga knowledge and began combining it with different ways of exercising to achieve a better form and endurance possibilities. Soon I was teaching classes to sold-out spaces and began taking personal clients. I soon developed an 8-week Program that emphasized the importance of proper posture and proper breathing. These are the key distinguishing elements of my program which I truly believe helps my students stay in the right path to fitness success.

As many fitness gyms became heavily impacted by the pandemic, I decided to share my knowledge and passion with everyone that was going though hard times and who felt demotivated. I began offering free classes to help women feel valued, with a purpose and most importantly, empowered. Soon it became bigger than I ever expected, with over 1800 women all over the world doing my eight weeks program. Not only I’m helping them with their fitness goals but I am helping change their lives in so many levels. I received hundreds of messages on a daily basis thanking me for helping them out with a sense of structure to their days, a reason to love themselves beyond the physical level.

Helping people with anxiety, depression, women that have struggled with fertility, mothers that are losing their shit with their kids at home among so many other stories that make me so humbled and fortunate to be able to help any way I can. I put together a community where women feel safe to share their struggles, to communicate with one another and uplift each other to be better, be loved, practice self-care, and above all, SELF LOVE!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I ventured into this profession with no expectations, I just love what I do. My only motivation has been the passion to help others achieve their goals by believing in themselves… I feel lucky and blessed to be able to do what inspires me. On the other hand I’m a wife, a mom of three boys, and as any other mother… I cook three meals a day, I make our beds every morning, clean every single car, superhero, Pokemon, sonic, Mario brothers, legos, organize my home, all while I manage the fitness life of over 1800 women who at this point are like my stepdaughters.

During this pandemic, we have been hit hard in the sense that we have to do more than ever to keep our kids busy and entertained to cope with being locked inside the house for such a long time.

When it comes to building my business, I can say that I always have taken an attitude to grow it organically, and the support I have received is beyond my wildest dreams. The hardest part is splitting my time to help as many women as I can while I continue with a sense of normality during not so normal times. I feel blessed to be able to do what I do, and my hardest obstacle is figuring out how to help even more women while there is just one Maria! LOL

Colombian Mafia Fit – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a personal trainer who loves to help people break out of their own shells. Being from Colombia, I love to add a spice of my culture to my workouts and my approach to a healthy life. I strive to help my clients feel happy with themselves first, and then everything else falls into place much easier.

Since the pandemic hit, we all had to adjust and pivot to new ways to continue doing what we do. I started my 8-week challenge almost two years ago with the intention of helping those women who had a harder time getting into the grove of starting a healthy lifestyle, and then now, it has become something way bigger as more people look for a way of creating some structure from home. Thanks to the possibility of using live zoom classes and video conferencing, I have been able to be with my “stepdaughters” all the way till the end; I even call them when I see them posting messages of their struggles…I give them tough love, but always straight from the heart, no BS!!

My company is growing faster than expected, we are now helping our costumers have access to buy the equipment I use to work out myself, and the same equipment we use under my program. This is something that I really want to continue to grow organically and see where it takes me!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Achieving happiness, being lucky enough to work doing the one thing you love the most, being surrounded by people that uplift me, and help others as you go.
