Today we’d like to introduce you to Leanne Macdonald.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began volunteering at North Central Animal Shelter in Lincoln Heights walking dogs and cleaning cat cages in 2010, and eventually was taught to groom by one of the shelter Vets. I then started working in a pet store, learning more about grooming and also about pet nutrition, and the business side of the pet industry. I moved on to work for a mobile doggie dental clinic traveling around LA to different pet stores and grooming shops, when I decided I wanted to pursue grooming as a career. After completing grooming school and obtaining my certificate, I groomed clients’ dogs in my home and continued grooming at the animal shelter, until I opened my business in April 2016 as R&G Pet Spa.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Opening a business for the first time is absolutely a challenge and I’ve faced some obstacles along the way, but for the most part it has been a really great learning experience. Training to be in my field was the easy part! Designing my business model, looking for the perfect location, dealing with planning, construction and permits, and being flexible with ever-changing plans and schedules were a few of the struggles before we even opened our doors. After opening, we had some slow months in the beginning but soon we built up clientele. One facet of owning a business that can be a bit of a task is finding the right employees to work with who share my level of passion for pets and delivering impeccable service and expertise. Another struggle I have had as a business owner is understanding that my to-do list is ongoing – it will never be all checked off! Someone recently explained to me, that is the whole point of running a business well – there are always too many things to do and it should be that way, otherwise you’re doing something wrong. Now I try to relax, knowing that as long as I stay organized, I will eventually complete my tasks and reach my goals, and then they will be replaced by new things to get done!
Please tell us about R&G Pet Spa.
I am a pet grooming, servicing canines and felines in the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley. We are a specialty grooming shop, focusing on the skin & coat.
We are known for our individualized service: we take time one-on-one with each of our clients to discover their individual needs; we do not like to rush our interactions, and we see our clients as part of the R&G family and they are treated as such.
We are known for our cage-free grooming environment: we do not run a “daycare”, however when the dogs are not being worked on, they are free to roam around our shop. We find that this tends to make them feel more relaxed, although we do have kennels for those pups who find free-roaming a little overwhelming. I specifically designed and organized the shop so that it would be safe for the dogs to roam, and we have several rooms which we can separate groups of dogs if needed; our shop is open, both for the pet owners to see what we’re doing, and for us to see where the dogs are at all times – our rooms have large windows which enable us to monitor everyone closely. We take pride in the safe and loving environment we create each day at R&G.
We are of course known for our special spa treatments. We offer organic handmade sugar scrubs, massages with pet-safe essential oils, Dead Sea salt soaks, and we will soon be offering CBD oil massages for dogs who are more anxious and nervous. Our scrubs and soaks nourish and treat the skin, and our massages are so relaxing and comforting for canine clients that need something to take the edge off!
I am most proud that our clients trust us so much with their pets, they come to us with questions unrelated to grooming and really trust our expertise.
What sets us apart from the 20 other grooming salons in Pasadena is that we are an intimate grooming shop, not a factory to churn out pets. The safety and happiness of the pets in our care is paramount for us. We are extremely transparent with our customers. We focus on skin and coat, and we are innovative in the offerings we have. We are constantly learning and improving.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would only change small things about the layout of the salon – I’m already planning little renovations to make us more efficient! Everything else, mistakes included, I would not change because I truly feel that I’ve only learned from them and wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
