Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Foster.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. I have a background in the fashion industry and first started out working as an assistant in marketing and PR. I loved working behind the scenes and putting pieces of an event together. Fashion shows were my absolute favorite! It’s quite cliché, but after planning my own wedding, that love of putting an event together and the magic of weddings brought on one of those light bulb moments. Once I wrapped up my own wedding I began thinking about planning weddings as a career. I began working as an assistant for a couple of well know planners in Southern California, learning and gaining experience from the experts. I learned so many big and small things from these amazing women. With some experience from the pros, I felt ready to pursue a client of my own. I started casually advertising to friends and family that I was offering planning services and a close friend decided to trust me with her big day. Another referral came soon after. After working with only a couple clients of my own, I knew I loved this work and began taking steps to make a real business for myself. More referrals came from fellow newbie entrepreneurs in the industry, and friends of friends that were tying the knot. Here we are 2 years later and although I still feel like I am in the beginning stages of growing a business, it’s pretty awesome to see how far things have come from my lightbulb moment back in 2014.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? Mostly my struggle has been gaining exposer and booking clients in a very saturated market. There are so many great vendors to choose from in southern California and as a new business it can be a struggle to get in front of potential clients without breaking the bank on advertising. This year I am also working on scaling as many couples are getting married in the fall season and I’m finding I am getting inquiries for dates I’ve already booked. Working on expanding the team so we can cover multiple weddings on the same day/weekend. I’d love to give someone an opportunity like I was given when I first dipped my feet in, and ‘pay it forward’ for others with my same passion for weddings and events.
Jessica Foster Event Planning – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition? Jessica Foster Event Planning is a boutique event planning company specializing in heartfelt weddings for modern romantics. We love taking the crazy ideas couples have for their big day and helping bring them to life. I love working with clients to incorporate personal details in their wedding like quotes from a favorite song, their pets, or family traditions. I like to think of our couples as our best friends, who we get to help plan a super fun party, celebrating their love. I don’t view our clients and just a job. I genuinely want to get to know them and be along the for the ride of planning their best day. I’ve been really lucky that the couples we work with are super cool, and genuinely good people. It’s a major bonus to meet and work with clients and vendors that you truly enjoy being around!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on? Winning a couple’s choice award from wedding wire this year! There’s no better feeling that hearing from a client that you did an amazing service for them! Their kind words mean the world to me and give me the most fulfillment in my work. This award was evidence of a job well done serving my clients.
