Today we’d like to introduce you to George Briseno.
George, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and what were some of the struggles you encountered along the way?
I got introduced to photography at the age of 16 by my friend Mark. It’s been a journey ever since.
As the saying goes “The struggle is real”. Mentally more than anything. For me, it was the constant need to prove to myself and others that I could do this. Eventually, I learned that it’s not the right effort to be pursuing this with that type of mindset. Although, the need to prove is a great source of energy, it’s ultimately one that comes from a suffering state. Whether that was me trying to hide the humiliation of past pain, the need to be remembered and appreciated, it all came from a source of pain. Once I understood that the need to prove was a constant obsession with myself and that I was creating all these troublesome situations for me creatively and personally, I learned to let go. It’s a constant a practice but a practice of none the less. Remember to be gentle with yourself.
Please tell us about George J Photo.
My photography specializes in portraits. Currently, I’m working with music artist and helping them develop their album covers, inserts, etc. That’s what I’m known for at the moment and as well all the testing I do with the modeling agencies here in LA. What I’m most proud of is my persistence. A lot of people have come and gone but I’m still here clicking away. I think what sets me apart from others is my love for photography. As cheesy as that may sound, there’s a lot of people getting into this for the wrong reasons. Its an honor and privilege to be given the opportunity to even have this time to document a piece of our lives. The world is disappearing in front of our eyes every day, and for me it’s our responsibility as photographers to capture and pass down what we saw and learned to the next generation.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Taking the business side way more seriously. Your art is the product and if you want to level up, you have to treat it as such. A big piece of advice I got is that clients are looking at us as solutions. We have to show convenience and a strong sense of logistics for our clients to trust us. So for all of those starting out, please please please, develop your art and make it as best as you can. Then learned the business side and attack attack attack.
