Meet Gabriela Babila of Matana Organics in West LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Babila.

Gabriela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Motherhood inevitably leads to big changes in all parts of life, for myself these weren’t just lifestyle changes but a newfound passion. I grew up in an immigrant household where my mother put a huge emphasis on holistic approaches. However, it wasn’t until becoming a mother that I really understood what that meant. Looking at health from a new perspective–and that health lies inside and out. This began my journey and passion for clean beauty and becoming an eco-conscious consumer. Honing in on habits that make me feel good and look great.

I felt inspired to share the path my mother showed me with others that were struggling with the changes that pregnancy and postpartum can create. And so, after careful research and with the help of skincare experts and organic chemists, Matana Organics was born.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can’t imagine starting a business before becoming a mother. Motherhood and entrepreneurship have a lot in common. The initial excitement, fear and nervousness as your due date approaches are the same when you launch a business. The learning as you go, trial and error, are just a few things that come with becoming an entrepreneur but also raising children. Plus, motherhood has given me a newly found confidence in my decision making and multi-tasking skills that really come in handy.

I’m still figuring it all out and continue to have obstacles and challenges (I’m sure that’ll never change). As a mom though, I don’t have time to fixate on my child’s boo-boos, messes and meltdowns. This has allowed me to focus on the big picture both as a mother and entrepreneur and in turn more quality time to spend developing relationships and long-term growth goals. I guess you can say the lessons of motherhood have spilled into other parts of my life and the characteristics of an entrepreneur.

Matana Organics – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Matana Organics is a simple, safe, plant-based, cruelty-free product line created to support and soothe the changes life brings during pregnancy and beyond.

With a background in psychology, I knew how important it was to nurture the body AND mind during the transition to motherhood. And as I honed in on my self-care rituals, I struggled to find products that checked all the boxes to be safe for pregnancy while honoring my mother’s holistic practices of all-natural skincare. So, I decided to make it. Mom to mom, we know what you’re going through and want to help ease the transition into motherhood. Our products make it easy to give yourself worry-free “you time” to recharge. As Matana evolves, this gift remains a part of our brand to the mothers we nourish.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is subjective. When you become a parent, you see life differently and your perspective changes. Success to me means health and happiness. Simple as that. This whole pandemic has reminded us all how important and how much we take our health for granted. And as we slowly go back to our daily routines, we’re seeing the effects it has had on all of us. Not just physically but mentally. Mental health is such a real thing and it is so important to check-in on yourself. Do what you love and do what makes you happy. If you have those two things then the rest will fall into place.

It’s all I can wish for my family, daughter and myself. Health and Happiness is the way to a successful life.
