Meet DTLA Photographer & Writer: Perhansa Skallerup

Today we’d like to introduce you to Perhansa Skallerup.

Perhansa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan attending a fine arts charter school. I fell in love with California while attending UCLA’s school of Theater, Film, and Television as a playwriting and directing major. While in school I taught myself photography. After graduating I spent time traveling the US observing the countless micro and macro cultures coexisting in harmony and disharmony in America. I have always loved telling stories through different mediums not beholden to a particular form. Constantly expanding my breadth of knowledge in the arts.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have had the privilege of an amazing support system whether it be my loving family, supportive mentors and teachers as well as countless talented peers. Of course, a life in devotion to the arts and (hopefully) an uncompromised vision necessarily includes struggle and sacrifice. Sometimes this is self-imposed but more often than not come from outside forces. Last year, while coming back from a photo shoot late at night, I was violently assaulted and robbed of my entire photography kit as well as my car. In the attack, I suffered a broken nose, clavicle, and a concussion. The first half of this year I’ve spent recuperating in body and mind. However, instead of deterring me from the life I’ve chosen it has emboldened me. My pursuit in capturing the light, darkness, and wonder of the world has only amplified.

Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
Fortitude to keep on going when things aren’t going my way, dedication to my craft and believing in the value my unique perspective and skills provide.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love LA for its amazingly creative and diverse population. It is a city that attracts the dreamers and doers all over the world who want to create a new better world. What I like least about the city is the pollution and the homelessness epidemic.
