Meet Chris McCoy of Shotbychris Photography in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris McCoy.

Chris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been interested in photography but I never knew where to start and what camera to buy or even how to use a camera but one day a friend encouraged me to buy a camera for a road trip. I got to final destination satisfied with my purchase and had fallen in love with the art form.

Has it been a smooth road?
Other than my own ignorance for when it comes to photography the only real challenges I faced came from me not having any connections or marketing skills. I had major issues bringing in a following and building a client base and to was intimidating due to all of the amazing photographers here in California. Still to this day, it’s hard for me to get together a full team for a shoot and it usually just ends up being me.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Shotbychris Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I do portrait photography but more specifically, I shoot all of my work on film. Lots of people are starting to get into film photography and it’s great for the medium but I think the thing that sets my photographs apart from other people is simplicity I capture and still being able to convey different emotions and reactions with each photograph.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love coming to LA because I feel like it’s one of the cities where you can be whoever you want to be without much judgment. The only I hate about the city honestly is the traffic and how crowded the city is

  • $150 for short personal photo sessions
  • $550 for promotional photos such as album covers
  • $60 collabs models/photographers pay for the film and I cover development
