Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Osawa.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story is simple. I used to be a kid watching Zoolander who wondered about the photo industry. When I grew up, fashion photographer Dah Len picked me up on the streets of Manhattan. I fell in love with the industry and the way of life. I then worked for 2 more NY photographers until I left to Singapore to become a designer. Soon, I became associated with Singapore’s underground art and music scene, wasting a bit of time here and there. I’ve been away for a long time, but I’m back to Cali for now. Waiting for anyone to conduct a shoot with. ;))
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not that smooth. I’ve been an architectural designer for a while, I’ve worked on Andy Warhol and Magnum photos exhibitions, and been on newspaper for being an artist. It was definitely not the way to become a photographer. Especially money was always leaking out on art projects and it was challenging to save up for photo gears. It took me 4 years to save decent money to prepare myself for an all-out quit to get to become a photographer. Then the new work industry dilemma and the “you’re on you own” boat ride. I would have never made it through without the support of my wife, family, and friends.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Charles Osawa story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m known for my Black and White photography. But my colors speak. I’ve been working more on color photography also because I shoot architecture photography. I manage to cater almost any shoots, including food, but my specialty is editorial / fashion / interior + exterior , and portraits. I’m exploring new fields of photography that is more extreme and psychedelic. Always seeking for collaborators and people to work with.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
All the time. Luck is the best introduction to success.
