Today we’d like to introduce you to Brigitte Bagley.
Brigitte, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Los Angeles from Seattle 10 years ago to pursue my dream as a fashion designer. I graduated from FIDM with a Fashion Design major and began to pursue different areas within the fashion industry. Initially, I began my career at a fashion PR firm that represented L.A. brands.
I became inspired by these designers which led me to a production manager position for a high-end luxury line that manufactures in N. Hollywood. Working for these local brands has given me so much knowledge and love for “slow fashion” what they represent.
I fell in love with the art of creation. My whole life I was artistic, I have always appreciated the craft of making something come to life. I finally decided that I was going to take a leap of faith and design my own leather jackets and handbags.
I eventually want to become a unisex line for both apparel and handbags. I slowly invested in my dream on my own, which took a lot of time, patience, and commitment. It is not easy trying to build your own company and working another job full time. I had many sleepless nights, but I hung on to the vision. My ultimate goal is to do custom pieces and create a timeless quality product while drawing the question “who made your clothes?”
Has it been a smooth road?
Is there such thing as a smooth road in life? I have learned to accept the bumps along the road, they definitely built my character. The biggest struggle was trying to keep my dream alive while working for others so much. There were days where my dreams seemed so far, yet so close.
I also had a lot of discouraging moments when I would start comparing myself to other designers. Comparison can truly be the thief of joy, so I had to constantly remind myself of my purpose and why I am following my dreams. I gained so much confidence in who I am as a designer once I stopped comparing myself to others.
Struggles are inevitable, but the road becomes a lot easier when you stand strong in what believe in. I have so much love for what I do.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bagley Design story. Tell us more about the business.
Bagley Design is a company that represents quality and integrity. I love designing and creating products that you will want to keep for a long time. The “slow fashion” movement has really opened my eyes to how terrible fast fashion has taken over the world.
I am so proud of knowing that my jackets and handbags are made in a safe and healthy environment with love. My favorite is doing bespoke work and customizing for a client’s vision while keeping my design aesthetic. I recently did a custom leather duffel bag for French Montana’s new CIROC flavor “French Vanilla”. I really enjoy making a customer’s vision come to life.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see myself having my own showroom and manufacturer under one roof. I would love to have clients come and witness all of the creative work behind their product. I want my company to be one that celebrates creation, and respects the time it takes to make beautiful pieces.
The “fair fashion” and “slow fashion” are movements I want my company to highlight and standby.
