Today we’d like to introduce you to Blair Bogin.
Hi Blair, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a filmmaker turned astrologer. I suppose you could have seen it coming…I was always addicted to the movie theater but also hooked by the human psyche, always curious about how the hell we’re all supposed to come to grips with life. I grew up with a learning disability and really struggled with my mental health – art was a real pressure release. I spent most of my time making home movies. When I was 16 years old, I decided I wanted to be a video artist. Eventually, I moved to New York, worked my way up internships, landed an editing gig in the film industry until I realized I wasn’t being a video artist but something a little too socially acceptable and safe. And so, I left New York – I hopped around farms, ambiguous jobs, Buddhist temples, I studied under mystics, experimented with every branch of yoga, flavor of dorito, every self-help library loan…and while slow-mo crawling in the underworld, I guess you could say I got pretty lost, I guess you could say I was being a “video artist”, I guess at some point, the only option for moving forward, was to go back, alllll the way back…and so I returned to the source: my astrological birth chart.
After seeing the complex wholeness of my chart, I was like *oh* so this is my deal with the universe to use myself fully – the night sky is really the ultimate movie screen.
It’s been 11 years now since I began going steady with the stars. Today, I combine my fluency in astrology with my work as an artist and life coach. I mostly work with fellow artists, activists, empaths, wild ones, weirdos, or really anyone trying to find a place in the world for their actual gifts.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No ! nonstop ego-annihilation, nonstop failure – allowing myself to live a full life, no matter external circumstances has been the only way through. Being skillfully human is hard, and I wouldn’t answer this question in the past tense – I am always becoming myself, always learning and growing and I’m never bored.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist and astrological mutant. I offer an intense mix of intuitive coaching and cosmic wisdom. Outside of formal chart readings, I teach two ongoing workshops: Your Life Is Enormous, a radical astrology/personal growth adventure and Space Craft, a seminar for artists to make work based on their birth charts. I love to abstract astrology into unconventional forms – videos, performances, comedy, community events and I write a monthly newsletter that reports star vibes through moving images. When I am not obsessing over the universe, I’m lying motionless on the floor or co-running the creative activist group Operation Project in LA.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
The list is endless – I’ve been mostly shaped by my dear family, close friends, lovers and DIY art communities. As far as mentors, Melissa Tiers taught me how to use my brain. Laura Keyser, Kelly Surtees set me solid with astrology. Olivia Ephraim Pepper and Austin Coppock taught me the hermetic arts. John Gilkey, Amrita Dhaliwal, Matt Ghoulish and Lin Hixon taught me how to trust my creative instincts.
