Meet Andy Templeton of Andy Templeton Photography in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Templeton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Andy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always had a love for photography. So after high school I started taking classes at a community college. I was going to be the next Ansel Adams. While there I was introduced to works by photographers like Robert Frank (The Americans) and Larry Clark (Tulsa). I lost interest in photographing rocks and clouds. People were much more interesting. I got hooked on journalism.

So a few years later with a degree from CSUF I started working for newspapers and magazines around Southern California. I photographed Presidents, Super Bowls, and people killed by trains. I enjoyed a behind the scenes view to the world. I learned to be better than just good at creating story telling images under deadline.

Back in the 1980’s you could take your wheel barrel to the top floor of most newspapers and they would fill it with money to fund just about any project you wanted to work on. Not anymore. It was time to become my own boss.

I started Andy Templeton Photography to create photographs for clients that want to use professional images to share the stories of their businesses. In today’s visual world everyone from the CEO of a Fortune 500 company to a small business like my own, needs photographs to brand them.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The greatest challenge I have met is marketing. Using the right lighting and camera angle to make someone look great is easy. Getting your business on the first page of Google is hell. Keeping up with all the constant technical changes going on with cameras and computers is still fun, but I would not mind if it slowed down of even stopped (kidding!).

Please tell us about Andy Templeton Photography.
I specialize in producing high quality photographs for clients that know the importance of representing themselves with professional images.

I believe my experience in photojournalism is a great asset. Knowing that I can work fast while producing quality images helps me to bring confidence to a shoot. It allows me to walk into the office of an ultra busy executive and put them at ease and get results they are happy to use.

Most people really do not like to be photographed by a 200mm zoom lens and studio lights that shows more details then the eye can see. A LITTLE retouching is given to most if not all of my images. I emphasize little because going too far with photoshop is worse than no retouching at all. The camera adds about 10 years to people’s faces. I try to remove about 11 years. I actually had a young female client that just passed the bar who wanted me to make her look older. Each client is different and I am happy to do as little or as much as they require.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my earliest memories, I might have been 6 years old, was sitting in a patch of ivy and looking for bugs. I remember thinking “This is cool!” That and kissing Ruth Smalls on the playground in 5th grade.
