Meet Andrea Kaye of The Silk Trading Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Kaye.

Andrea – kick things off for us.  Where and when did this story start?

I founded the Silk Trading Co. in 1993. From savvy shoppers to celebrities, we offer design, value, and customer service. Our Design House is one of the last places you can go for custom work on projects ranging from historical drapery and archival silk to doggie beds. We have made it all.

Sixteen years ago there was a tremendous growth and interest in The Silk Trading Co. The Drapery – out – of – a Box changed how people shop for window treatments. These are ready-made, luxury drapery with interlining, lining and silk, linen, sheer or velvet textiles. This created a designer friendly way for clients to purchase what high end custom workrooms were sewing. Shops in ABC Home, NY and Harrod’s, London opened.

The signature, exclusive lines of fabrics have also become a favorite as a home furnishing resource. Intricate silk velvet jacquards, matte lasse, taffeta, velvet, mohair and European linen are still the best sellers. Custom furniture, headboards, drapery and pillows are available.

Has it been a smooth road?
In 2007, just prior to the collapse of the housing market we were selling our line of ready-made drapery to well-known large store brands like Neiman Marcus and Williams Sonoma. As these retailers began to “take a hit” from the financial crisis our sales also slowed down. It took several years to see high end drapery come back as designers and the trade gradually re-established their profitable marketplace.

The Silk Trading Co. has always stood alone in its retail and trade categories. Selling to both the designer and home owner was in itself a new idea. We were part of the first showroom lines to be open to the public. This took away the mystique and confusion over window treatments and home furnishings. Everyone is an insider at The Silk Trading Co. There is an old-school sense of style and service running through our Design House. Remember when a dry cleaner would leave a peppermint in your pocket? That attention to detail still exists in our life style brand. Nuance, tweaking and time are a luxury in these busy days. With us, it is a necessary pleasure. To hand – make something in Los Angeles, with a unique product for each of our loyal customers gives me pride.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is so varied and open as a culture that I think it is a great place to start a business. In terms of my interior design firm, yes L.A. is easy to recommend. There is a lot of creative energy in a town that houses Rock and Roll and Hollywood. This bubble also has the financial benefits of a wealthy clientele whom can indulge in luxury products and life-style. For someone who is attached to the housing market, Los Angeles also has a thriving property market with lots of windows.

  • Our drapery begins at @$360.00 for a double width panel and goes to @$680.00 for a double width panel
