Meet Alexus Fay Carter of Skiintones in Compton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Fay Carter.

Alexus Fay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started wearing jewelry at a young age. I come from a family where the women love to adorn themselves in gold and colorful stone Earrings and necklaces. It kind of just stayed with me, I love adding jewelry and accessories to what I’m wearing because it automatically makes you just stand out.

I got into clay jewelry after I took a ceramics and sculpture class. I officially launched SKIINTONES in the beginning of 2017. I just wanted to create the jewelry I would love to wear, jewelry that wasn’t something you’d see in stores or even from designer brands. I’d like to say I create jewelry with an attitude ! I started off just shooting the designs on myself in my room, then I eventually would shoot my friends. Then I started doing concept shoots and collaborated with a lot of L.A. based creatives. I would get an idea or would see a shoot from the 80s or 90s and just vibe off that.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not easy designing and selling my jewelry. To be very transparent with you; during the first year, I was only getting one sale a month. It’s hard to operate a one-woman business because I’m not only creating jewelry but I have to shoot it, do my own marketing/networking to build brand awareness and pack & ship all the orders myself. I’m also doing the customer service part to make sure customers or potential buyers are taken care of. It gets really stressful and sometimes I have to take breaks.

SKIINTONES – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SKIINTONES is a jewelry brand that specializes in clay, stone, & bead jewelry. All designs are completely original and truly one of a kind. I think what helps my brand stands out is that I’m not afraid to play with vibrant colors and bold shapes. I’m most proud to know that when people wear my jewelry they feel like they are wearing something unique and that empowers them.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have many to be honest. But I would have to say that one of them has been seeing my jewelry being worn on a model during New York fashion week at a show. That made my day to see just how far I can go.
