Today we’d like to introduce you to Salena Rosa.
Hi Salena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for Hair and beauty began as a young girl growing up in New York City, I would always go to the salon and watch my mom get her hair done by my cousin, who was one of the best stylists in HarIem. I would look at all the stylists in the salon and see how they would style their clients and when I get home, I would try some of the styles on my friends and it always came out so good as if they had went to the salon. I even practiced on some of the girls in my church. I’ve always been obsessed with all things beauty. I became obsessed with doing my own hair in the 5th grade creating styles I would often see in the magazines. After high school, I really wanted to go to cosmetology school but my parents wanted me to go to college. In which I became one of the first in my family to obtain a college degree. Following college, I went to cosmetology school to complete my cosmetology course and obtaining my cosmetology license. That had ignited a fire in me that I did not know I had. I was so eager to get into the beauty industry. I started working during fashion week, Major events in New York City such as Dior fashion week, Tracy Reese (designer) as well as a few photoshoots and video shoots. Soon after, I relocated to the Washington DC metro area and began working part-time as a stylist. While working in the DMV area, I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of stylist working on lace closures, frontals and wigs. I already had taken a class learning about hair Prosthetics and I was able to fill that need in the dmv area. I became so booked, I had to quit my full-time job working in retail and began working full-time as a stylist in a salon. I started Glamourtresses ten years ago supplying hair extensions and custom wigs to my clients, tapping into a billion dollar industry. Since then, the brand has grown, supplying hair extensions across the globe, becoming an exclusive luxury brand to consumers. Not only do I supply luxury extensions, I can honestly say that I have accomplish many things in life. I’ve owned several salons, worked with several celebrities, participated in LAFW, NYFW and partnered with several brands. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Getting Started in the beauty industry has not been a smooth path. I had applied to so many salons once I received my cosmetology license and each salon wanted new stylists to have clientele. I’m like how can I have clientele if I don’t have a place to work? Which often amused me when I was asking myself that. I finally received my shot in a salon in Brooklyn, NY working as an assistant to a stylist part-time while managing my full-time job and taking care of a toddler. Though it wasn’t easy, I was able to make it happen. The one thing my grandmother always say is the worst someone can tell you is no and to keep pushing. When I relocated to the Washington DC area, I went through a similar situation, being new to the area. I applied to so many salons and it’s so crazy that now those salons are looking for me!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My Favorite books I like to read are motivational books for self-improvement. I also love to read books about investing and Financial Literacy, which is a major key when becoming an entrepreneur. It’s always room for growth so I like to attend webinars and go to events where I can learn about business and be an advocate for women empowerment.
