Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Kasler.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in London in the UK. As a young man, I was very entrepreneurial. One of my first “businesses” was selling Xmas wrapping paper on the high street, eight sheets for 50p (around 1$). If it rained, we would switch to umbrellas. After that I moved onto hot dogs in Central London, starting at 9pm finishing at 4am. Lots of stories to tell from that. I was desperate to travel and see the world so at 22 moved to Spain to start selling holiday apartments, this allowed me to move onto similar jobs in Dominican Republic, Russia (Siberia very cold) and Thailand. I found my way to Australia in my early 30s where I set up a wine investment business, this flourished and I spotted an opportunity to relocate my business to Singapore. The business went very well and I sold it in around 2008. In 2010, I set up an art investment business in Hong Kong selling Chinese contemporary art, again this business flourished and I sold it in 2019.
I had started selling whiskey to some of my art investors in around 2016 so when I sold the art business I started focusing on this. I opened my Sydney office in March 2020 as all other businesses were closing for COVID. The LA business opened in 2021 and here we are.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been many ups and downs but mostly ups. It is not easy relocating to new countries so often. There are many benefits with this as it’s easier to see gaps in the market but there are many challenges for instant communication in Russia (every deal had to be done via an interpreter. Managing the different legal obligations in different countries (US is the most challenging). Recruiting staff when I often knew no one (quite often my previous staff would follow me to a new country. I’m pleased to say I’ve finally put down roots and intend to stay in LA forever with my new wife.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
In 2019 I launched CaskX with the goal of bridging the gap between distilleries and investors to bring the financial benefits of whiskey investment to the global stage, all while helping distilleries withstand the cash flow pressures that are inherent with whiskey production. The company has grown to serve investors and distilleries through offices in Sydney, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. By offering unparalleled transparency and advanced technology, CaskX is ushering in a new era of investment into the whiskey industry. We allowed our clients the opportunity to invest into full casks of new fill whiskey, something that had previously only been available to industry insiders.
We are market leaders and the biggest whiskey investment firm in the US.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Treat everyone with respect regardless of who they are. Don’t burn bridges because in life and business, you need to be pragmatic. You may need to work with this person again to achieve your goals.
