Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Lawrence.
Stephanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
With over 12 years of experience as a professional makeup artist, I often found myself in need of a quick, sanitary and efficient solution to remove stubborn lip products. Inspiration suddenly struck on set of a huge commercial when I was asked to completely change a lip shade from deep wine to the model’s natural tone. Not an easy feat! Heart racing and problem-solving hat on, I used all available resources and just barely managed to make this adjustment happen in a timely fashion, with everyone overlooking on set. It was in this moment of intense pressure, I recognized there was a need. Why wasn’t there a lippy erasing swipe?!? I spent the next four years researching, crafting, developing and finally manufacturing Lip Lūffa.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s wild to think of all the challenges and obstacles I have encountered while juggling my freelance career and trying to create a product. From inner struggles just to talk about the idea, then literally two years of hearing “No!” from manufacturers and labs to waiting weeks for reformulations and don’t get me started on logos, LLC’s and taxes! There have been many mistakes and lots to learn. I have had to pace myself so I wouldn’t become too discouraged.
As an artist, one unforeseen challenge I have encountered is imposter syndrome. I have never created a product nor have I any idea how to go about an e-commerce business and my own negativity really held me back from growing and making decisions for my business. Every mistake made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. It has been an active choice to be confident in my decade of freelancing and all that encompasses with business, as well as leaning into the fact that I can still learn something new. We can always learn something new. We are more than just one thing.
My advice to young women just beginning their journey is to create manageable goals, do your research, then stop doubting yourself and go for it. So many people have ideas but only a few actually stay up all night and make it happen.
What should we know about Lip Lūffa? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
If I had to guess, I’d say most all of us have used the edges and corners of our oily and bad tasting makeup wipes to ferociously scrub our lipstick and other products off. Or tried to! Only to be left with color remnants and irritated lips. Have you ever heard of a lippy eraser? Well, now you have! Lip Lūffa is a lippy erasing finger wipe and will swipe that color off while also gently exfoliating. Being the first finger swipe of its kind, Lip Lūffa is here to prep that pout! Use before makeup to clean and smooth, when switching from a day to night look, changing lip colors on set, or getting ready for bed. Lip Lūffa is proudly vegan, non-oily, hydrating and part of the rainforest alliance.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
When starting my business, I made it a point to absorb and read as much as possible. Books, articles, essays and TED Talks were and are key to my growth. The very first book I read was Invent It, Sell It, Bank It by Lori Greiner. I got it from a dear friend and her husband, who had it in their library. I mentioned it seemed like a good read and my wonderful friend let me keep it. I still have it to this day. Another book, The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Keeping Your Sh*t Together by Sherry Walling, PhD with Rob Walling. This was a most thoughtful gift from my boyfriend and partner. He has experienced firsthand how challenging it has been for me over these four years and presented me with this useful book that outlines how to deal with one’s mental well-being during the grueling process of following your dreams. The last book I’d like to share, I received from a client who became a sort of life coach while we worked together and it is called The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer. The wisdom and self-awareness that pours from these pages often calls me back and I have read countless times. I even have two copies-one I refer to with notes and one that is clean and sits on my nightstand. These books have been so useful and I would suggest them to anyone.
