Conversations with the Inspiring Kaylee Sachs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylee Sachs.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduating from high school and attending community college for two years, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. The one thing I did know was that I loved to draw. This led me to enroll at the Art Institute of California, Hollywood. Originally, I started in the animation program but later discovered graphic design was more within my wheelhouse. One of the required courses for animation was called “Acting for Animators” and it’s that class which piqued my interest in acting. By the end of the course, I was asking suggestions from anyone and everyone for an acting class to enroll in. I ended up enrolling in a scene study class directly across the street at Stuart Rogers Studios with the brilliant Michael B. Silver. Around the same time, I also discovered aerial dance and after just one class at Up Flying Yoga, I fell in love. After graduating with a degree in graphic design, I started working for my father at Sachs Marketing Group, an award-winning digital marketing agency. Flash forward five years to today and I am the Social Media Manager at Sachs Marketing Group, an aerial dance instructor at Up Flying Yoga, and an actress repped by DC Talent Management. I work my butt off to pursue three careers that I love and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like anything in life, there’s been both ups and downs.

Overall, my biggest struggle has been time management. I tend to put too much on my plate and have a hard time saying “no”, especially when I am doing the things I love. Since my schedule is constantly full, I experience a lot of stress and anxiety. Learning when to say “no” and making time in my schedule for self-care are things that I am still working on. One of my anxieties is wondering how I’m ever going to have enough time to do all the things I need in order to move forward in my careers. And how can I make sure that I am consistently moving forward? The piece of advice that’s helped me most is this: Do something every day to move your career forward just a little bit. This could be something as simple as uploading a new clip to Actors Access or making a list of connections who might be able to help you find representation. So long as you are taking a step forward every day, you are making progress.

In terms of acting, some of the challenges I’ve faced are finding the right studio to study at and figuring out how to advance in my career.

There are so many acting studios in the Hollywood area. How do you find a place that not only teaches you what you need to know but also is a positive learning environment? It’s so important to find a studio that inspires you and makes you excited about going to class each night. Find a class made up of people with good energy and a coach who not only encourages you but also pushes you to do your very best work and grow as an actor. Surrounding yourself by creative, talented, and positive people will do wonders in keeping you motivated and inspired.

Finding representation is something that many actors struggle with. When I felt confident in my abilities as an actor and was ready to take my career to the next level, I really wasn’t sure where to start. My best advice to other actors in this position is to simply start talking to people and ask questions. You will be surprised how much people are willing to help you if you just put your intentions out into the world.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in social media marketing and am so incredibly proud of the work we do at Sachs Marketing Group. We truly care about the success of our clients. Hearing how much a company’s business has grown as the direct result of our efforts makes all of our hard work and dedication worth it. I am proud of the many awards our company has received, including “Best Entrepreneurial Companies in America 2015” Entrepreneur Magazine and Inc5000 Honoree 2016 to name a few.

Teaching aerial dance classes at Up Flying Yoga has been such an incredible experience. Watching the girls in my class grow as aerialists make me extremely happy and proud. I stand on the side of the room and watch them during a free dance with a huge smile on my face. I strive to create an environment in my classes that makes the dancers feel welcomed, comfortable and excited to be there. It really becomes a community of positive, creative, and strong women encouraging and supporting each other week after week.

My growth as an actor is the achievement that I am most proud of in my acting career. In the past two years, I have performed in my first play, signed with a manager, more than doubled my audition appointments, booked my first role from auditioning, landed my first lead role in a short film, wrote and filmed a monologue for the first time ever, and most importantly made a handful of fans along the way. I’m extremely optimistic about the future and look forward to what I can achieve.

I would say that my work ethic and positive attitude is what sets me apart from others. If I set my mind to something, there’s nothing that’s going to stop me from achieving that goal. At the same time, I always remember to keep a positive attitude. When one door closes, another door opens. So, if something doesn’t go your way, don’t dwell on the past and instead look forward to what the future holds.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
A great teacher of mine once said, “Celebrate every single win, no matter how big or small.” This piece of advice has stuck with me and is something I think about often. It’s a long road to any successful career. We must not only think about the end goal but also enjoy the process along the way. A win could be landing an audition, scheduling an agency meeting, writing a short film, performing in a play, etc. I encourage you to celebrate ALL the victories along your journey.
