Conversations with the Inspiring Danny Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Sanchez.

Danny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was at a point in my life where change was in order. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in a field that really captured my imagination. As I cast about, trying to take that next step, it hit me – ever since I was a child I loved gems. They’re hypnotizing, mysterious. When you hold them, it’s like holding pure light and color in your hand.

When I discovered there was a school you could attend that taught gemology I didn’t waste any time. I fell deeper in love with gems and minerals and from that day forward, every day, I’m reminded I made the right choice.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Photomicrography is a terribly complicated and nuanced pursuit. I spent several years spinning my wheels in solitude. With a world at my fingertips, I had the gall to think I could figure it all out on my own. When I finally got out of my own way and reached out for advice/help, the world opened up. The simple act of putting my pride aside, admitting I don’t know things and asking for help is one of the most important lessons I’ve learned during my journey in the scope. People are happy and excited to help – I just had to ask.

what should we know about Mineralien Photos? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a photomicrographer. This means I take photographs through a microscope. (No, not a microphotographer. That’s a whole different thing!) Specifically, I take photos of gemstones through the microscope, framed to look like other worlds. It’s like landscape photography except on another planet … and inside a gemstone.
My approach and results have taken me and my work into galleries across the U.S. and even over to Europe.
I’ve been featured in magazines and give lectures regularly but I’m most proud when my work inspires others, the way I’ve been inspired by so many artists through my life.
