Check Out Sean Rowland’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Rowland.

Hi Sean, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After traveling the world for ten years as a WSL (formally ASP) staff photographer, I teamed up with co-founder Jeff Gourley on Nomads Hotel. Jeff and I have over 30 years of world travel experience between us. We realized the type of hotel experiences that we have enjoyed in remote places like Central America, Fiji, Tahiti, and Indonesia were unavailable here in the United States. We set out on a mission to create the look, feel and taste of these amazing international hotels and restaurants that we have visited in our travels.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It took us a year and a half to get the permitting thought the City of San Clemente. But after we opened, the road has been mostly smooth. Like all businesses, we have made some pivots due to COVID, and these changes seem to be working in our favor.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I was a freelance surf photographer for 15 years prior to opening the hotel in 2015. My biggest clients were World Surf League and Surfline.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up on the Central Coast of California in a small town called Atascadero. “A-Town” is nestled in the heart of wine country neighboring the World Famous Paso Robles. I was a surf fanatic using every bit of my free time in the water at Morro Bay, Big Surf and everywhere in between.
