The Weekly Bite: The Hangout in Seal Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seal Beach ’s The Hangout.

I imagine many of your best customers don’t even know the story behind The Hangout – can you share some of that story with us?
I was a professional poker player for 6 years then in 2012 my wife and I decided to try something dif. We saw the restaurant for sale. With no experience ever in the biz we took a leap of faith and bought(Kinda Lahaina) and turned it into The Hangout. Now we are one of the busiest restaurants in Seal Beach. We have 4 children our oldest is 21 and works full time in the restaurant. I still play poker for fun and recently made a WSOP and WPT final table. The WPT table was televised.(i took 4th place for $178,000. We then spend Hangout Too and My Italian Kitchen.

Every story has its ups and downs – what are some of the difficulties you’ve had to deal with over time?
We were lucky with such a great location. With the ocean view we were able to make some mistakes and still recover. We learned a lot about the biz int he last 5 years. Always learning and never be complacent. Complacency is the death of a restaurant.

The best part about independent spots, in our view, is that they are able to think outside of the box and experiment with new ideas, take risks, cater to niches, etc. How does that apply to you guys?
We like big bold comfort food with a southern twist. We aren’t afraid to try new things. We have huge burgers, Jack Daniels Bread Pudding French Toast. Deep fried bacon mac n cheese balls. We do things dif then other restaurants. We do Taco Thursday! We have amazing specials everyday from 1/2 off fish n chips on Weds to Southern Sunday Super every Sunday and lots more.
