Tara and Marlene Herrera of Los Angeles on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Tara and Marlene Herrera and have shared our conversation below.

Tara and Marlene, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of our day are all about grounding ourselves. We always begin with a gratitude prayer, thanking God for our health, our family, and the blessing of another day to grow Little Lady B. After that, we get ready for our morning workout with our trainer. Moving our bodies has become such an important ritual for us as business owners; it keeps our minds clear and our energy balanced. By the time we are done, Marlene’s meal prep is waiting, usually a simple protein breakfast she prepares for the week so we can nourish ourselves before diving into work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We’re Tara and Marlene, twin sisters and the co-founders of Little Lady B., a women-owned children’s fashion brand inspired by our niece, the original Little Lady B herself. What began as a simple desire to create something meaningful for her has grown into a heartfelt mission: celebrating the magic of girlhood through heirloom-quality dresses and accessories that are gentle on her skin and on the planet.

Every piece is made from pure, natural fabrics and thoughtfully crafted here in the USA. We design slowly and intentionally, focusing on quality, comfort, and timeless silhouettes that let little girls twirl freely and confidently. What makes our brand unique is the love behind every detail, our family story, our commitment to sustainability, and our belief that girlhood is a story worth dressing up for.

Right now, we’re focused on expanding our collections, building deeper connections with our community, and sharing more of the creative process behind our brand. Little Lady B. is more than clothing to us it’s legacy, sisterhood, and heart stitched into every piece

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Our mom and our professor, Tawny Sherrill, have taught us the most about work. From our mom, we learned the value of showing up with heart, discipline, and humility. She raised us to never make excuses, to honor our commitments, and to take pride in doing things the right way. Professor Sherrill reinforced those lessons in a professional setting, teaching us how to meet deadlines, stay organized, and hold ourselves accountable.

Together, they shaped the foundation of the work ethic we bring into Little Lady B. every day. Their example reminds us that success is built on consistency, integrity, and doing the work even when no one’s watching.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that has held us back the most is the fear of both being heard and being truly seen. We’ve been shy our whole lives, and for a long time we stayed quiet because we worried people would judge us misunderstand who we are, criticize us, or make assumptions based on our appearance. That fear made us shrink ourselves, even when we had ideas, creativity, and so much heart to offer.

But this year, we made the decision to stop letting that fear lead. Joining different cohorts and mentorship programs has pushed us out of our comfort zone and reminded us that our story, our voice, and our presence matter. We’re learning to speak up, to show up fully, and to trust that even if not everyone understands us, the right people will. And that shift has been one of the most empowering parts of our journey as founders and as women.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Our closest friends would say that what matters most to us is our spirit staying grounded in faith, leading with kindness, and always checking in with ourselves on a deeper level. They know how important it is for us to live a healthy, intentional life… from the way we nourish our bodies to the products we put on our skin, to the habits we build every day. They’d also tell you that we care so much about growth. We’re constantly trying to evolve, heal, and step into the best versions of ourselves; not just for our business, but for the people we love and the little ladies design for. At the end of the day, we want our lives to reflect purpose, wellness, and heart.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
We hope people say that we lived our lives with open hearts. That everything we built, especially Little Lady B. was rooted in love, sisterhood, and the belief that every little lady deserves to grow up feeling empowered and free to be her truest self. We want our legacy to show that two shy sisters found their voice, not just for themselves, but so others could find theirs too.

We hope the people who knew us remember how we made them feel seen, heard, valued, and completely at ease. That our kindness, integrity, and generosity weren’t just traits, but the way we moved through the world. And that our commitment to uplifting women wasn’t a message… it was a way of life.

More than anything, we hope people tell the story of two women who never gave up on their dreams, who kept going even when it was scary, and who believed deeply in the magic of what they were building. And if our story leaves others feeling warm, inspired, and a little braver about chasing their own dreams, then we know we did something meaningful.
