Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaya Newborn
Hi Zaya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My family is in the entertainment industry so I was introduced to that world straight off the bat. Three of my grandparents are musicians and my parents are professional dancers. I’ve always known I’ve wanted to do something creative so growing up my parents had me train in dance, singing and acting. I went to LaGuardia High School in New York where I majored in Vocal. I then decided I wanted to focus more on dance so I moved to Los Angeles with my mom’s help, when I was 17. Throughout that entire time I’ve also wanted to model, but because of my “body type” didn’t believe it was feasible.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I’ve touched on briefly, my body has always been a huge struggle for me. I was made aware of not having the “correct” body for performing or modeling at around 8 years old when I was put on my first diet and was only allowed smoothies for 3 days. That heavily affected my confidence and led to a binge eating disorder that I struggled with until I was around 22. The narrative of my body not being small enough was always a topic of discussion especially when it came to my dance career.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional dancer and model. In my dance career I had the privilege of booking a music video for my dream artist, FKA Twigs which has definitely been a highlight. I am very proud to book jobs as a dancer in the body I have. It’s extremely important to me that people know that you can achieve a beautiful career in the body you have. I’ve finally become comfortable with myself in the last couple years which has led me to lean into modeling. I’m very grateful that times are changing and there is more representation out there.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I have been lucky to have a few mentors throughout my life and would say making sure you have a variety of talents, opinions and personalities is important. It’s extremely easy to lose yourself when you are idolizing a mentor, so stay as connected to yourself as possible. I’m regards to networking in general, staying open has been huge for me. There are incredible people everywhere you go so if you feel inclined to start up a conversation with someone don’t be afraid to! A simple compliment goes a long way
