Today we’d like to introduce you to Younis Dhaher.
Hi Younis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all really started when I won this Last comic standing competition at UIC. That was like my first time really giving stand-up comedy a shot and I haven’t looked back since. From there I gradually started hitting open mics, doing some small showcases wherever they let me. Then before I knew it. I met this group of guys with a similar mindset and vision and we created what we know now as “Terminal 5 Comedy”. We went from a small Chicago comedy troupe selling out small shows in our hometown to selling out an international tour.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say the biggest struggle was trying to perform and be part of the existing infrastructure that was established in Chicago. We weren’t having any luck getting into any clubs or shows that were already running. The good news was it helped us be more independent and helped us realize that we don’t need anyone’s help to get us on. All we truly need was support from the people.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a stand-up comedian who honestly just wants to make people laugh, learn and grow by being the most authentic version of myself. I think being honest, vulnerable and kind is the foundation I want to operate out of, and building a community around that is one of my main goals. I just love this craft so much and being able to bring people together is something I am most proud of. I personally do not know what sets me apart from others. My main focus is to constantly just grow as a comedian and be the best version of myself. There is no need or reason to compare myself to anyone. I believe everyone has something great to offer and we can all coexist with each other. There is enough room for everyone, I personally know if I just remain the most authentic me, there is no one to compete with or compare myself with.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Honestly, I can definitely see comedy specials being shorter, also more activity on social media including even VR when it comes to stand-up. That is about it, in the end of the day you still have to be funny live and on stage.
