Rising Stars: Meet YANBING CHEN of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to YANBING CHEN

Hi YANBING, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I used to work as a commercial producer in China for four years, overseeing everything from creative development to final delivery. That experience gave me a solid foundation in visual storytelling, project management, and attention to detail.

Later, drawn by my connection to the ocean, I started learning freediving and gradually transitioned into underwater photography. Now based in Los Angeles, I combine my commercial background with creative work, using the camera to explore the relationship between humans and nature. I’m also working to introduce underwater imagery to a broader audience.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is that I don’t have a formal background in photography. At times, especially in a city like Los Angeles where the film and photography industry is so established, that made me feel a bit insecure.

But every time I’m underwater, I feel like I’m back on home ground. Down there, it’s not about technical labels — it’s about intuition, presence, and connection. That’s where I feel most confident and free to create.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an underwater photographer and freediving instructor based in Los Angeles. I started my career as a commercial producer in China, which gave me a strong foundation in visual storytelling and production.

Over time, I shifted my focus from commercial work to the ocean. In the water, I found a deeper sense of freedom and authenticity. My work explores the connection between the human body and nature, using underwater imagery to express emotion, stillness, and flow.

What sets me apart is my ability to merge creative direction, performance, and camera work into a single process — all while underwater. I believe in using my art to reconnect people with nature and themselves.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Los Angeles is its unapologetic imperfection. You can wear whatever you want here — there’s no pressure to look polished, unlike places like Paris or New York where everyone seems to be performing a role. LA feels more real.

The only thing I don’t like? The ocean is way too cold! It’s seriously a challenge for someone like me who works underwater… though I say that half-jokingly.
