Rising Stars: Meet Vanessa Obmann of Rancho Cucamonga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Obmann.

Hi Vanessa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been playing with makeup for as long as I can remember. I was very artistic as a child & I remember being so enthralled watching my mom do her makeup. In jr. high, my artistic abilities started to translate into makeup. I started asking for makeup for every occasion where someone was buying me a gift. When I was in highschool, I was the one that everyone came to to do their makeup for dances & special occasions. At 18, I got a job at a salon & that is really where I got to experience so many different skin tones & age ranges. Women would come into the salon, see my makeup, & ask me if I could recreate it on them. At 23, I started Prive Beauty Group. I really knew nothing about owning a business, but I was determined to figure it out & make it work. Right now I am in my 16th year of business. I have done thousands of weddings. I have worked on TV shows. & my business has truly been the biggest blessing to my family & me. I have built an amazing team of artists & we work all over southern CA.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For my first few years in business, I was definitely still learning & building. I remember thinking that booking 15 weddings was amazing! Then the next year it was in the 30s. Then next year in the 60s. Some years booking up to 150 weddings in a year! The hardest years were definitely during Covid. My business basically came to a halt. No one was getting married, Venues were cancelling. & I was faced with basically 0 income from a once booming business. Thank God my business recovered in the years to come, but 2020 & 2021 are definitely 2 rough years that I will never forget.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional makeup artist & I own a business that primarily does weddings. I would say that I specialize in natural glam. Most of my clients do not wear a ton of makeup, & I always hear, “I still want to look like myself.” I love enhancing women’s natural beauty. & I am so proud to be a female entrepreneur, with an all female team. We are a bunch of creative, hard working women!

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think some people may be surprised to learn that I am a single mom to 3 little boys & so I do not wear makeup probably 90% of the time. They hate waiting for me to get ready. So I’m a makeup artist who shows up most of the time with a bare face. Of course for special occasions where photos are involved, I get myself all ready. But in my day to day life, I keep it very natural.
