Rising Stars: Meet Todd Wolfson of La Canada, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Wolfson

Hi Todd, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Back in the day (sounding old), you would drive down the streets of neighborhoods and see groups of children riding bikes together, playing sports and having fun outside as a group. Thats how I grew up, and thats how I learned and developed a love for sports and athletics. As soon as our homework was done we couldn’t wait to get outside and play sports and games with our friends and neighbors. That was the essence of my childhood and truly shaped who I am today. Playing sports is something I think everyone should do (even if they aren’t athletic) because of all the lessons that sport teaches. It teaches you how to win, how to lose, how to play with others, make new friends, health benefits from the fitness aspects and how to play on a team etc. It teaches you life lessons that you will need to use for whatever field of work you get into.

I am now in my 16th season as a head varsity basketball coach, and 10 years at St. Francis High School in La Canada, CA so I know the importance of sport and how much its shaped my life. After 16 years of coaching and working with kids, I truly felt there was a need for a summer sports camp that had the values that I was raised with. Having fun, competition, working with others and so much more. This is how I came up with Golden Knights Sports Camp.

Now in its second year, Golden Knights Sports Camp brings fun and excitement to La Canada, CA. From flag football to ultimate frisbee to basketball and GaGa ball and so much more, Golden Knights sports camp is fun in the sun for everyone. The camp is for 2nd – 8th graders on the beautiful campus of St. Francis High School. We have so much fun all summer long playing sports and having fun! It brings me back to when I was a kid, having fun outside playing with people in my community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting any business has its ups and downs. “It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop” is the quote I love that reminds me of the road in which it took to get here with Golden Knights Sports Camp. When we decided to begin our first year and went live with registrations, we had a total of 5 kids sign up for camp with about a month and a half to go until we started. I was getting worried that we wouldn’t be able to get this camp off the ground and my vision would be all for not. But then, it took one or two kids to sign up and spread the word to their friends for the sign ups to begin really coming in. We eventually got to 65 kids in our first year, and we made sure each one had a blast! In our second year we have 260 kids and counting. Its so important in business to put an emphasis on customer experience and customer service. We strive to truly make the experience for the camper an absolute blast! From the sports and games, to the prize room and more, we try to make the entire camp experience memorable.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Very positive person!

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
First is, life is about hitting curveballs. You’re never going to just have everything go your way and starting any business, you must have the perseverance to withstand all the obstacles that are going to come. The second piece of advice would be to surround yourself with really good people. It’s somewhat difficult today to find people who are really good at what they do and really positive and when you surround yourself with those kinds of people, it helps you be succesful. I am a huge believer in the right kind of people make all the difference.
