Rising Stars: Meet The Sentimentalists

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Sentimentalists.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We are originally from Toronto, Canada. For decades Mysterion performed a mentalism act on tv and stage and in 2013 Steffi Kay joined the show and The Sentimentalists were born.

Steffi and Mysterion love performing and amazing people with their two-person mind-reading show. It shows when they appeared on the CW Fool Us, fooling Penn and Teller and making Steffi the first woman mentalist to do so.

In a short time, the Sentimentalists were performing at The Magic Castle on Franklyn Ave and small fun spaces like the Mystic Museum in Burbank. In no time Steffi and Mysterion appeared on America’s Got Talent, filmed in Pasadena and the Dolby in Hollywood. Since 2023 they have made Hollywood their new home and are performing at venues and private events for celebrity clients and private functions.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The world of entertainment is always unpredictable and the road winding. One day you are on top and the next in a small venue in the middle of nowhere, but we love performing for everyone equally.

We were doing a lot of work pre-2020 and of course, the pandemic halted this and we had to take the show virtually. Steffi and I are able to adapt and always find a solution.

After we appeared 3 times on AGT, we returned back to Canada after Covid and went on CGT and did extremely well. The Canadian version of the show really framed us properly and allowed us to shine.

Now we are being booked for events and performing at company events and functions. Because no two events are ever the same, the challenge is always there to build something new for every event. The challenge is fun.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The Sentimentalists are a mind-reading duo. At events we are most known for being able to know things about you there is no way we should. Someone will hand Mysterion a credit card and Steffi knows the security code instantly. Another person will draw a picture and Steffi will duplicate it. This is the same effect we did on Penn and Teller Fool Us. Winning is the trophy. Mysterion is known for his ability to bend a spoon with thought, while Steffi can tell you a word you are thinking of from a book.

We are also the recipient of the Allan Slaight Award in Magic for Rising Star, which is a massive honour. Steffi is known for vintage fashion, wearing high-end 1930s and straight out of vintage Hollywood: Mysterion is more like he walked out of Hollywood Forever with his spookier allure. Together they are the perfect unlikely combination.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Magic is an interesting space to learn in: Some may choose to have a mentor or an act they look up to. The Chavez School of Magic in LA is excellent.

There is a lot of material written on magic but it’s pretty protected so to become a master in the craft it takes a lot of time and practice.

Thankfully now there is a lot available online but it’s most important to do things organically and network with others In the industry. It’s best to learn from others.

Doing a great job is what works for us, making others happy and always going one’s best. People talk, and they love to share their experiences so a lot of our work is because of word of mouth.
