Rising Stars: Meet Tess Clare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tess Clare.

Tess Clare

Hi Tess, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began writing and recording songs at 13-years-old, in my hometown, just north of Chicago. I  graduated from the fine arts boarding school at Interlochen Arts Academy in Traverse City, Michigan, and then went on to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where I earned a degree in songwriting. Now that I’m based in LA post-college, I play live shows monthly with my band. Under my current artist project, Tess Clare, I’ve released two EPs and consistently release singles every few months.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Music is not a straight path. It took me some time to develop my sound, and still, that continuously evolves. The major struggle I once had was trying so hard to fit into a certain lane/genre and overthinking where I could be successful versus creating the music I felt most drawn to. I learned to allow the blend of my influences to organically come together to make something unique, and hopefully beautiful, all in one, through my voice. And of course, aside from the creative side of music, there’s always the business side of how to get your music heard, finding the right team… But that’s show biz, baby.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer-songwriter specializing in indie pop. I believe my voice, that is earthy and has been described as “a wild horse,” is very distinctive and sets me apart from other singers. My focus is writing music for myself, as well as writing for other artists. One of my most proud moments was being selected recently by Ones to Watch, under Live Nation, to play my first music festival, Music Midtown in Atlanta. Playing live is absolutely my favorite thing in the world, so being able to play a major festival was truly a dream come true.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
My favorite thing about LA is that it has everything: like amazing food, nature, obviously entertainment… If only it also had better parking and public transportation.
